I have been playing other RPG's for 19+ years now, yet I never played a D&D- game until 3rd edition. I read through the AD&D book once and I didn't like it, so I never played.

I used to have a saying:

AD&D is like MSDOS, it sucks but everybody uses it!

Now im TOTALY into D20, and I hardly play anything else, so I joined the masses in the end after all.

I started playing at age 10, back in 1995. I was in 4th grade and hadn't heard of D&D before my friend Adrian got me into it. Adrian is from the East Coast, and I think he's pretty much the one responsible for introducing D&D to the current high-school generation in San Diego...

I started when I was a wee'un, about 6 or 7, IIRC. I thought the cartoon rocked and knew my neighbor across the street played, and got my folks to pick me up the red box set. <stares off into space nostalgically> OK, I'm back. I wasn't old enough to have heard about the "demonic" rep. Did it have that rep in '84 or '85, or was that later?

Oh, yeah. Darkness, I think you mean Hantei XXXVIII in your post, not Hentai XXXVIII. The first is the Emperor of Rokugon slain in the Coup. The second is just nasty. :)
