Die rolls for PCs, (4d6 drop lowest arrange)

Point buy for NPCs that need to do a specific thing,

MajorNPCs I might point buy or Roll depending on thier role.

Rolls for the rest if they are minor characters and have stats in thier statblock, like 4 hobgoblins.

Background folk get 10s and 11s with one 12.

Aaron.

4d6 drop lowest die, 7 times, droping the lowest number of the set, then do that a second time. Choose one set you prefer. If you write up a good background story and have a well defined character idea, you get up to three more extra rolls.

When finished with all the rerolls, arrange as desired.

I'm in tons of games (see sig :) ) and most were point buy. Some were rolled, though.

If there's something in paticualar I'm going for, I prefer to go Point Buy to make sure I get the necessary scores to fit my vision. But if I'm feeling experimental, I like to roll and see what comes to me.

Myself I prefer (and encourage) Point Buy, though the exact pointage and costs can be tweaked to get the effects that the DM wants. I will add that though I used to love dice-rolling, I am pretty vehement that it causes too much trouble between players. When attribute scores a really important (as say they are in 3e, or the Storyteller system), the differences in power levels can be excessive when rolled. It's not necessarily that the weaker characters are weak in and of themselves, it's just that the person for whom the dice are smoking will outshine the others in their own sphere. This causes needless envy, in my opinion. Better that people design the character they want and know that they've had the same breaks as everyone else.

We as a group use point buy or 4d6-drop-low. THe latter method you get only one redo, and if it is worse (and it was for a current character of mine)...

But I answered point buy, because my campaigns use it exclusively. My upcoming campaign is based off of the fairly reasonable assumption that not all characters are truly equal: some with starting levels, others with higher powered races, yet others wil random special abilities. In this campaign, the ECL mechanic is discarded, but more powerful races cost you points in the point-buy system. It's hard to approximate, but about 4 points per +1 ECL.

We periodically have a fairly high-powered mini-campaign where we just make up the character idea and background first and pick stats to fit. If you have infinite rerolls (a la Baldur's Gate?), then you might as well simply pick you stats. :)

-Fletch!

We use the standard PHB roll system.

As a DM I am considering point-buy for a group of beginner friends who have already started complaining about having screwed-up stats, and they haven't rolled them yet! :D
