I only use point-buy in my D&D games nowadays, and I went straight by the book for 4e - that is, the default array. (Although I gave an option for my players that they could turn their 10 into an 8, but raise their 13 to a 14.) We were doing group character creation with 1 PHB, so I needed to speed things up however I could.

I did allow rolling in my SWSE campaign. Since SWSE gets less wahoo than 3e or 4e, it has worked out.

I used to love rolls. Wild, chaotic, but unreliable. Then point buy came into my life. It gave me exactly what I wanted, but it was undisciplined in its own way.

Finally, I tried elite array, and things have been great every since.

Still prefer random over point buy, BTW, but nowadays I prefer my card method which minimizes spread, but manages to handle what I consider weaknesses in point buy.
