If they are only spending a couple episodes in his alternate timeline, how about streets filled with phantoms (non-dangerous ghosts, unless the party uses some sort of Speak with Dead or other disturbing ability) going about their daily business. Then at a certain time during the day they all stop and look towards the massive skull or statue of a hand with an eye inside of it.
