Differing backgrounds in gaming groups

Heh. That makes me feel stupid.

In my group of folks who play in my games, we have:

A welder at a navy shipyard
two unemployed folks, formerly telemarketers (one of whom is me)
two current telemarketers
a ski lift operator
a machine maintenance person at a bakery.

An automotive engineer for saturn
A computer programmer for IBM

A union sandblaster
A telemarketer
and finally myself a dispatch operator for Hewlett Packard.

Cool thread! Lots of attorneys, teachers, and CPU folks.

When I was in law school I started an unusual group. I mentioned at my favorite bar that I liked to game to one of the cooks. He convinced me to run a game after hours on Tuesday night.

We started after the bar closed 2:00 AM with three cooks, two bartenders, two bouncers, and one law student (me). We played until 5:30 AM and everyone had a blast. Let me tell you - that group was hard on my grades, but what a blast. Hard-drinking, fun people who had never played any kind of RPG before.

The only hitch was an occasional fight over cigarettes or beer, but for the most part I have never had a group so completely enthralled in adventure gaming.

Helped me realize something I already understood in part - There are a lot of brilliant, creative people who never stepped foot on a college campus.

BTW - this is also a sneaky bump to see more group compositions. Mine's at the top.

arwink's already covered one of the games I play in. Other groups that I play in add the following to the list:

Business Analyst x 2
Database Administrator
University Student (economics) and part time call centre person
Laboratory Technician x 3
Trainee Nurse
University student (education) and part time teacher
Self-employed
High school student
Part time restaurant staffer

  1. Rob "Ljungen" Ljung Well this is me and I'm one of the DM's in my group. My background is a bit tattered with bits and pieces. Working in healthcare (hospital), and part-time as a websystem developer and graphics designer.
  2. Markus "Cookie" Karlsson The other DM in our group and a lil bit of a dreamer (he is however probably the most intelligent in our group). He is currently attending a film-making school and loves to write and make movies.
  3. Yildirim "Julle" Denizhan Our lovely Turk in the group that just loves monks and martial arts. He is currently in Denmark and going to a school for Actors (5 years education)
  4. Simon "The Tame Polack" Moberg Well he has a polish father and spends his summers as an adventure trip guide. Most of the winter time he spends with other stuff (he likes the time off when it gets cold).
  5. Henrik "Da Hunk" Aldén Currently unemployed, but likes to train and get in shape (also calls himself the most miserable man in the world since he is quite shy and has a hard time to express himself in the company of the opposite sex)
  6. Joel "Big Boy" Kilbäck Well the rich and spoiled as we call him (it is all good-hearted). He is currently unemployed and tends to do less exercise then he needs (he knows it and we try to pep him into doing more)
    [/list=1]

Well that is my bunch, we have known eachother for more or less 11 years and has played togather for about 10 of them (all of us played before we played togather but we didn't know that the others played LOL).

Thanks to GGS (Gollum Game Society, but some people have a tendency to answer Golden Gay Society in the phone to see how people react) me and Cookie met up and we disocver that both of us played and that is how it started.

My wife used to joke that one night the US government was going to come arrest us all on suspicion of some conspiracy.

"Now all we shall need is a Nuclear Physicist, and a Lepidoptera Accumulator, and the WORLD IS OURS!" :D

My current group is rather homogenous: it contains
2 Systems Administrators
1 Web designer and programmer
1 Truck Driver
2 Students
2 Computer Techs and Sales Associates
1 Eleven Year Old. job? kid. :)

Others who have gamed with me in the past include
1 Janitor
3 Chemists
1 Dentistry-school student, who Should Be a Dentist By Now
3 Sys Admins
1 Floor Manager at a Honda Plant
and about a half-dozen guys who either are trained at multiple things, and rotate jobs, or who I have no clue WHAT they do for money now. :)
