Digital map in home games

Hi,

I'm a dnd 5e DM.

Currently I'm using Realm Works to prep my sessions and i use a second monitor during the game to share pics of npc's, when dungeon crawling I show the map room by room,... but not during combat

Now I would like to use the monitor during combat and show the position of the combatants and be able to move them. I've been looking at d20 pro and fantasy grounds and I'm not sure it's what I'm looking for.

Can anybody tell me from experience of this is what I'm searching for or recommend another program?

Thanks!

There are 3 good discussion on the use of FG as a table top that I suggest you read. They include pictures of setup and play. There are more pictures on some various map Kickstarters and other places.

After you look at the posts, ask whatever questions you have, but I think these posts will give you a good basis for asking more or possible even making your decision.

Is it possible to do this with Roll20 or d20 pro? I'm trying to find out which program is best for assisting the gm at the table.
I heard of people doing it with Roll20, though they of course have to have internet connectivity (which FG does not). I suspect you can do it with d20 Pro, though I have never heard of anyone doing so. You can also do it with Maptools, which I have heard of people using.

I have used D20Pro for years. I think it is a great program. If you want it to be able to move npcs and pcs it works great. You can use as much or as little of the automated combat features as you wish. It is very flexible to your preferences at the table or away. It also will take the Herolab files for import into the program. Since you use RealmsWorks (me too), this is a welcome bonus. Not every import is perfect, but the majority of information is there and can be edited as needed.

Hope this helps!
