Yeah, IMC it depends who you're asking.

If you ask me, the Creator of the setting, there are no gods, just sublimely powerful mortal spirits. There are also thousands upon thousands of them, with differing levels of power and sentience.

heh, this is similar to my answer. I chose both 'no gods' and '101+ gods'. As the supreme ruler of my campaign, I am free to say that there are in fact no beings which actually grant spells, or have a quality we might be able to define as "divinity", if we were bored enough to sit down and define divinity opposed to very powerful beings who have achieved a form of limited immortality... And there aren't even very many of those...

However, there are religions aplenty, that being humanoid nature. And many clerics (and adepts and some arcane casters for that matter) believe that their diety of choice grants them magical power.

In my homebrew there are a bunch in addition to or replacements for the ones in the PHB. I will have no compunction about bringing more in or killing some off or whatever. Players can worry about it if they like, as I tend to play the religion thing very light handedly.

Just to be safe, I put 100+

In my standard campaign, I have three major pantheons with about 20 or so major deities in each and one with only a handful, but I also picture powerful spirits that are in essence minor (rank 0) deities that are followed non-exclusively by more shamanistic cultures. There are some overlap and deities that have different guises, but there are still probably over 100 all told.

I use the pre-FR canon demihuman deities. I also use deities from real world myth... one culture follows the whole celtic pantheon, though I have sprinkled deities that are aspects of aztec, hindu, chinese, and finnish figures throughout my various cultures.

IMC, I have the following.

*One very dominant overgod who has four "saints".
*A small group of "old gods" that few worship.
*Druids
*"Cult powers" - thousands of small gods that no one trusts, and there is a huge stigma against cultists (because how can you be sure that a god isn't healing you just to fatten you up for the big sacrifice?)

The dominant god has the largest portfolio. The old gods have about three or four domains. The cult gods have exactly two domains, but I support all combinations. The idea is to encourage and reward the players for being "normal" and work within the campaign setting, but if a player REALLY wants a character who follows a god of war and fire, he can ... but he'll have to hide his faith.
