Interesting. Now those dime novels would fetch a pretty penny. Despite that they were reviled by the more well off people due to their "cheapness" of not being hardcover.

I love the real Penny Dreadfuls -- Varney the Vampire (the longest running serial publication of all time, if I remember aright) and Wagner the Werewolf!

Truly a penny, truly dreadful, great Victorian kitsch
