Dinosaurs, Rust Monsters and Big Ideas

Hm... Off the top of my head, Sandstorm has Ashworms, built into the creature entry is a DC 15 Reflex save for a rider to stay on or get knocked off when the ashworm burrows under sand. The Ashworm Dragoon PrC progresses in abilities to remain on the mount in more impressive ways during burrowing.
I'm thinking there is a special saddle that helps with this, I'm away from ym books right now, I'll check that.

Locking saddle, or locking gauntlet fixed on the saddle maybe?

Oh, here we go! From the 3.0 book Sword and Fist, p.78, we have:

Two Person Chariot! 300gp, can be pulled by 1 or 2 horses. I'm thinking we attach it to two Bulletes instead, add another 300gp to make it Masterwork, and have a tunneling Bullette chariot!

Alright, even better, Single person chariot, Arms and Equipment Guide, p.56.
100gp, make it masterwork with an extra 300gp for whatever modifications to survive underground bouncing along and such. Put this behind your Bullette.
Interesting enough, the Chariot provides a +2 to Handle Animal checks, which offsets the -2 penalty to working with a Bulette. Nifty.

Sounds cool, but I'd rather ride the thing.

Presumably he straightens out to burrow. You'd need to lie down on his back with a helmet similar to the bulette's head (or similar to a time trial helmet if you watch pro cycling) and at least a heavy leather riding outfit if not actual armor.

The Umber Hulk, with its handy gaze attack, would also be cool.

Actually, by wildest coincidence, here is an Umber Hulk riding a bulette!!!!

They both have burrow, so that'd work with no problems.

I forgot to take into consideration size catagories, so you'd likely hitch a 2 person Chariot to the back of a single Bullette!

Is there any equipment that grants a PC with a burrowing ability? or anything for passing within underground tunnels? Any equipment that might assist in this? An armor enhancement that ignores crushing damage?

2nd level druid spell: burrow. could make a use-based item off this or just a wand.

Landshark boots soul meld.

I'll have to wait till I get back home to look into the soul meld, that's potentially useful.

I can see enchanting a masterwork, exotic saddle with a Burrow spell, contingent upon tunneling underground, to protect the rider.

Are you allowed to Necro your own thread?

Additional spells such at Earth Glide and Xorn Movement would be useful for riding a Bullette.

I'm hoping to expand on the Dinosaur Handling Guidebook soon. I had forgotten I was designing it, the Bullette discussion derailed me, as did real life.
