Disarm attempts... who wins?

This came up in game yesterday, so I thought I'd ask if anyone had an official ruling.

In a disarm attempt, if the opposed attack rolls come up with the same value, who wins?

Also, if someone tries to disarm a flat-footed opponent, does that opponenet still get an AoO?

I believe that ties mean the person was not disarmed.

Also, disarm tirggers an AOO, I would say that a flat footed person would be allowed their AOO.

Now, if they were surprized, that might be another thing...

I suppose surprise would prevent an AOO from a disarm.

actually in the player's handbook it says that flat footed characters do not get any attacks of opportunity.

the players handbook states: "If you BEAT the defender [on an opposed roll], the defender is disarmed."

so in this case the enemy couldn't defend himself (no AoO), but if he could have, he would not have lost his weapon

No harm, no foul. If it tells you anything, I haven't even really read the lurker thread. Besides, I don't like lables...unless I get to do the labeling.

I always let ties go to the "doer". I treat the other roll like a DC or AC, in both of which cases you only need to equal the roll not beat it to succeed.

I agree with you.

But what makes Disarm any different than Armor class, where an attack roll of greater than or equal to the AC connects? Wouldn't that be considered 'beating' the AC, even though the attack roll and the AC are equal?
