Discern Location vs. Bag of Holding

Well, what happens?

The party I am DMing stole a weapon created by a powerful mage. Said mage, among others, have the power to cast fairly high level divinations. The weapon is currently in a character's bag of holding, but discern location has range "unlimited" (meaning it works anywhere on the plane).

Since the bag of holding is an extra-dimensional space, what happens? Does discern location fail or does it succeed?

Thanks!

So it would only show the astral plane...right?

No, it would name "non-dimensional space".

My take would be that since every bag of holding opens into a different non-dimensional space, and the opening of the bag is the only way to get there, that Discern Location would reveal the location of the opening of the bag, on whatever plane the bag happens to be.

Either that, or I would have it give a unique designation for the bag of holding, which could then be located with another Discern Location, circumventing the "touched once" restriction.

"Nothing short of the direct intervention of a deity" shouldn't be able to be finessed by a 2500gp item.

For purposes of discussion, assume the spellcaster has touched the object before.

I would think one would learn that (1) the item is in a bag of holding and (2) where the opening is (geographical location on the plane). That seems fair.

Other comments welcome!

I'd say that the spell would say "extradimensional space number 4593875" and the wizard could then use a high-level spell to send himself there.

Um, ok. So lets say the spell returns such a reference. Now, would it be possible to plane shift into the extradimensional space, take all items therein, and plane shift out again?

I think Manual of the Planes has something to say about this. Off the top of my head I wouldn't allow it, but I don't know what the official stand is.

It might not be the brightest move, however, since your appearance might overload the bag and cast you through a rift to who knows where.
