Discern Location vs. Bag of Holding

I think Manual of the Planes has something to say about this. Off the top of my head I wouldn't allow it, but I don't know what the official stand is.

It might not be the brightest move, however, since your appearance might overload the bag and cast you through a rift to who knows where.

That's what summon monster is for :p

I have Manual of the Planes. Doing a quick search through the book, I did not find anything regarding the issue. Do you know what section or page numbers the reference is on? Thanks!

I'd say that the spell would say "extradimensional space number 4593875" and the wizard could then use a high-level spell to send himself there.

Personally, I'd say the spell only reveals that the item is, "on a plane with no name". The spell only returns the name of the plane. It does not give a name to every nameless extradimensional pothole unless your campaign routinely catalogues them all.

Um, ok. So lets say the spell returns such a reference. Now, would it be possible to plane shift into the extradimensional space, take all items therein, and plane shift out again?

Yes. Subject to the size of the bag. If the extradimensional space within the bag is too small to fit you, you can't shift in.

so you cast Reduce and make sure you have one of those Iouns Stones of no air!

My take would be that since every bag of holding opens into a different non-dimensional space, and the opening of the bag is the only way to get there, that Discern Location would reveal the location of the opening of the bag, on whatever plane the bag happens to be.

using KotD knowledge everyone knows that there are 2 types of Bags of Hefty Hauling. now if this is type 2 then you can just enter Bag World through your own Bag & seek out the stolen goods!

I think a nice way to handle it would be to assume that in the item creation process for the bag of holding a unique name would have to be created by the wizard for the new plane of existence that is somehow based on the name of the creator.

Once you know that unique name, then you can allow further divination magic to find the name of the creator from the name of the plane. Now you have a description of that particular magic item (the bag of holding created by xyz) and could possibly divine where it was.

This would also handle the situation when a wizard creates a pocket dimension for his stronghold.

As for a rope trick spell, since it's so temporary, I would just let the name of the plane be the name of the caster.

In my games, If someone casts Discern Location to find an item, and it happens to be located in a bag of holding, the spell will reveal the location of the item (which is in a bag), thus it will reveal the location of the bag. A bag of holding's extradimensional pockets is special in that it moves with the bag, thus it is part of it. Only if the bag is destroyed does it create a rift to the Astral Plane. That's how I handle it anyway, in a nutshell.
