So long as somebody wants to do that, you're good to go.

But if no one wants to (because they're more interested in other skills) or if the one player who did isn't there this week... you're in a bad spot.

Well, honestly, outside superhero games which tend to have various handwaves to get around it, you need some kind of medic in any game with significant combat.

Also at some point, planning ahead and filling a role in the group is part of the fun. Like having a comfortable niche and a job to do to make the party succeed. I think that falls by the wayside a lot, but I think it drives a lot of players.
