A quick question: Can you add spells to your spellbook, if they're of higher level than you can actually cast?

I just noticed, but the rules for craft points say that half the materials and craft points are lost on a failed check. However, the standard rules for crafting say that failing the check by 5 or more results in the loss of half the materials, but failing by 4 or less means you'll just take longer.

Is this change intentional?

Thanks for asking this question, Dalamar. I noticed the self-same thing a while ago but never actually raised it, except in passing.

The concept of Craft Points is discussed here. In effect, spending Craft Points is a substitute for spending the requisite time to craft an item.

Note that there are some differences between the SRD discussion and what we do in LEW. For example, the decision was taken to abandon the requirement for a specific feat to craft MW items, replacing it with a separate DC 20 Craft check with the appropriate skill. Another difference lies in the fact that LEW requires a raw materials cost which is one third of market price for mundane items (one half for magic items), rather than the one half which the SRD specifies.

There may be others which I'm not aware of. (Another one that I've just remembered is that LEW allocates 150 CP per level, rather than the SRD's 100.)

We'll have to wait for some of the other Judges to share their recollections of the actual discussions which took place, since I wasn't a part of them.

Whoops! I've actually just read through the whole entry I linked above - and it specifically says that on a failed check (no qualifier) you lose half the gold spent and half the craft points used. So in that sense, the SRD is tougher than the RAW. :(

'Nock

I can understand losing half the craft points on a failed check as they're "time", but losing half the materials when you barely fail seems a bit harsh.

I don't think so. You take a chance, try you hand with something you are not skilled at doing from you backbone.

Wik, I really appreciate the offer! It sounds like S2 is wrapping up, and I don't know that Razh will go on to S3. On the other hand, I also don't know that Rasereit is powerful enough to lead an expedition down into the depths, yet. And I discussed (briefly) with Manzanita the possibility of him DMing that adventure. So give us some time to hash out the final stages of S2, and I'll get back to you for sure.

Question.

If Vanitri wants to start his own Caravan of Freefolk, does he need the Leadership feat to gain the followers?

If you want free Followers, then yes, that is how it would be described. I've found a fix to the Elektra bug if you do want to take Leadership as the level 9 feat, but you'd have to take it right now.
