Discussion of Scotley's upcoming 4e Swashbuckler Game

Hmmm... there are a couple. The "best" at-will is likely Sword Burst.

A good Encounter power is Sword of Sigils from AP.

[sblock=Details]
Sword of Sigils

As you sweep your blade in a wide arc, it glows red and leaves arcane runes burning in the air above your foes.

Encounter Arcane, Force, Weapon
Standard Action Close burst 1

Target: Each enemy in the burst

Attack: Intelligence vs. AC

Hit: 1[W] + Intelligence modifier damage, and the target is marked until the end of your next turn. Until the mark ends, if the target makes an attack that does not include you as a target, it takes force damage equal to your Intelligence modifier after the attack is resolved.

Aegis of Shielding: If a target marked by this power hits a creature within 10 squares of you with an attack that does not include you as a target, you can use an immediate interrupt to reduce the damage dealt by that attack to any single creature by an amount equal to your Constitution modifier.[/sblock]

Channeling Shield is a good Utility power

[sblock=details]
hanneling Shield

You throw up a temporary shield to absorb some of the power of a foe’s attack.

Encounter Arcane
Immediate Interrupt Close burst 10

Trigger: An attack hits you or an ally within 10 squares of you

Target: The creature hit by the triggering attack

Effect: You reduce the damage the target takes from the triggering attack by 5 + your Constitution modifier.

Aegis of Shielding: The next successful attack you make before the end of your next turn deals extra damage equal to your Constitution modifier.[/sblock]

& for a level 3 encounter power Dimensional Vortex is a very solid choice.

[sblock=details]
Dimensional Vortex

Lashing out with your sword, you warp space, causing your foe to appear a short distance away and unleash its attack elsewhere.

Encounter Arcane, Implement, Teleportation
Immediate Interrupt Ranged 10

Trigger: An enemy hits an ally with a melee attack

Target: The triggering enemy

Attack: Intelligence vs. Will

Hit: You teleport the target 5 squares. The target then makes its melee attack against a creature you choose. If no creatures are within range of the target, the attack is expended.

Aegis of Shielding: If the target is marked by your aegis of shielding power, the target’s melee attack deals extra damage equal to your Constitution modifier.[/sblock]

Hope that helps :)

And that's not all, renau1g, AP also has a completely new build for the Swordmage - the Ensnaring Swordmage, "a sly hunter who closes in on your prey, punishing an enemy for any missteps, and hounding it until it is vanquished. Instead of selecting the Aegis of Shielding or Aegis of Assault, Swordmages using this build may select the Aegis of Ensnarement that gives them the following at-will power:

Aegis of Ensnarement
At-Will*Arcane, Teleportation.
Minor Action, Close Burst 2,
Target: One creature in burst.
Effect: You mark the target. the target remains marked until you use this power against another target. If you mark another creature using other powers, this target is still marked. Until the mark ends,if the target makes any attack that does not include you as a target, it takes a penalty of -2 to the attack roll. If a target marked by this power is within 10 squares of you when it hits with an attack that does not include you as a target, you can use an immediate reaction after the target's entire attack is resolved to teleport the target to any space adjacent to you. In addition, the target grants combat advantage to all creatures until the end of your next turn. If no unoccupied space exists adjacent to you, you can't use this immediate reaction, and the target doesn't grant combat advantage as a result of this effect.

So....ahhhh, not bad, I guess, but certainly no earth shaker. And there may be something better out there that you can access.

SwordMage Power

Hey, Lou, I like this one:

Blazing Pursuit
"You envelop your blade in fire and then strike. The flames create a lingering path that you can travel along to catch your escaping foe."
Swordmage Attack 1
Encounter * Arcane, Fire, Teleportation, Weapon
Standard Action - Melee Weapon
Target: One Creature
Attack: Intel vs. AC
Hit: 1[W] + Int modifier fire damage. If the target is within 5 squares of you at the end of its next turn, as a free action you can teleport to a space that must be adjacent to the target. [If you have the Aegis of Assault this power does a little bit more, too.]

Guess it's not as cool as I first thought. :-S

Speaking as a dedicated lurker, I have to say that keeping up with the OOC gamebuilding discussion here is at least as entertaining as some of the actual games that I follow. Good work!

I am rather pleases with the way this is going I must say. Comments from the peanut gallery are welcome if you want to add suggestions to the mix.

Themes. Okay, I've been reading Dark Sun themes. The description is a little unclear. If they only allow you a different choice of powers then I am in favor of them. If you get a free extra power then I'm going to have to say no. Otherwise everyone will want one and we'll have to explain where there is party full of dune traders and wasteland nomads in alt-northern Europe.

Good New/Bad News

The good news is I now have access to Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms, so you have some new Character options, as if we needed them. ;)

The bad news is I also picked up Monster Vault, so I have more bad guys to use against you. Muahahahah.

Hm. I dunno if we need a Thief -and- an Assassin. Pretty much identical skill-wise.

Perhaps I should try a character in a role we have less representation in...

Far be it from me to tell you what to play, but I expect a good bit of this game to take place in the city, court and nearby surrounding lands where such skills could come in handy. In a group this size it will be tough to avoid some duplication.

Comment from the peanut gallery here - Dark Sun themes give you one free encounter power and then a few powers that can be swapped for other powers. I think most, if not all, of the existing themes are pretty strongly tied to Dark Sun (or at least very much not quasi-Europe) and would seem out of place elsewhere.
