Dispel Magic and Counterspell

Greatwyrm

Been here a while...
I've seen some discussion lately on the difficulty of interrupting and countering spells. I'd like to address the latter, by throwing out these questions for discussion.

1. Do you/would you take Dispel Magic as one of your daily spells, specifically for the purpose of countering other spells.

2. Do you think it would be reasonable to make a new spell that functions essentially as Dispel Magic, but only works for countering spells?

3. What level would you say that spell should be?

4. What classes should have access to it?

5. Would you actually take that spell if you played a character of that class?

Whenever I play a spell caster who can cast Dispel Magic, I prepare at least one (depending on his level), but rarely use them for counter spelling.

Maybe. But do not think we need it. We already have Dispel Magic.

3. What level would you say that spell should be?

For what kind of classes? And how is that spell different form Dispel Magic? It all depend on those things.

4. What classes should have access to it?

It will not be unbalancing to give it to classes already have Dispel Magic. And creating Witch-Hunter type classes can be interesting.

5. Would you actually take that spell if you played a character of that class?

Depend on it's performance, level, and the situation the character is in.

1. No. I play a Druid. I don't take Dispel Magic at all. It's too pricy. The Cleric and Sorcerer have it, though.

2. I think it's reasonable. Probably at 2nd level, and 5th for a Greater Counterspell. Essentially the caster is giving up his chance to do more harm, but needs to make the caster level check for it to work, anyway.

3. One level below Dispel Magic

4. All that currently get [Greater] Dispel Magic.

5. Not as a Druid. Not as a sorcerer or bard. As a wizard/cleric if I expected to be up against someone a little more powerful than me (able to cast one or two spell levels higher).

I was kind of thinking like Dinkeldog on this one. A level lower for anybody that already has access to Dispel Magic.

As far as how it works, I was thinking identical to Dispel Magic in all respects, except it can only be used for Counterspelling.
