If something is actively attacking you, then sure. If everything is focusing on one of your companions, then no. And if something stops attacking you, then no. Or at least, that's how I'd rule it.And if they are attacked they can defend themselves (I read that as fight back, they just can't initiate an attack). IMO the take damage would apply to from the caster like most other spells of its type, but it doesn't clearly state that.
