Dispelling a golem?

Can dispel magic dispel a golem? This might be a stupid question, but assuming you beat the DC of the caster making the golem, is it possible?

Thanks!

In 3rd edition, Dispel Magic can dispel the ongoing effects of a Golem's Supernatural Abilities.

In 3.5, it can't even do that.

Golems are not Magic Items or Spells - they are creatures.

But isn't it a magic creature?

I don't mean to argue, this just came up at our game last week and we couldn't find a clear cut answer.

No, it's a construct. The magic creates the creature and then is finished -- a golem doesn't radiate magic, doesn't turn off in an antimagic field, and cannot be dispelled.

Likewise, you can't dispel a clone. Or a zombie created with animate dead. Nor can you dispel the recipient of raise dead back into death. The magic is over.

(the answer would probably come to me if I bothered to read the 3.5 Dispel Magic description but) Why can't it do that anymore?

Because in 3.5 you can no longer dispel Supernatural Abilities or their ongoing effects.

So in 3rd edition you can cure a basilisk stoning with Dispel Magic. In 3.5 you can't.

It's just one of those subtle and unannounced "why did that happen?" changes from 3rd edition to 3.5.

I think not. Flesh to stone requires break enchantment to fix, and I don't see any rule whereby basilisk stoning would work differently.

Because Basilisk Vision does not reference Flesh to Stone and never has. While Stone to Flesh is an Instantaneous effect which requires specific countermeasures - Basilisk Vision is a separately defined permanent effect (both in 3rd edition and in 3.5).

As we all know, permanent effects can be suppressed or dispelled just like any effect with a finite duration can be.
