Dispelling Haste with Slow. How does it work?

I though it was obvious that since slow say it "counters and dispels" it was the mere casting of the spell that did so.

On the dispelling part. A dispel spell only actually dispels anything if you succeed the caster level check. But slow says it dispels haste, so why do anyone question that it's automatic.

Because, while there is "Counterspelling" entry in PHB P.152, there is no "Dispel" or "Dispelling" entry in chapter 10 of the PHB. So strictly speaking, it is not 100% sure how dispelling works if that is done by spells other than Dispel Magic, or spells which is mentioning that "works like Dispel Magic" or something.

Countering means that with the Counterspell action, you can use either Slow or Haste to counter the Haste spell someone is casting.

But the Dispel, in the PHB, is not at all clear. If it said "automatically dispels", it would be unambiguous. But it doesn't. P154 says "negates", and refers you to the spell description. The spell description says it "dispels".

To assume that means "see dispel magic", which is the only other place dispelling is described, is not at all unreasonable.

To assume that, since the spell Slow grants a save, it only has its dispelling effect on a failed save is also not at all unreasonable.

The PHB is not clear on the matter.

AGGEMAM. IMHO wording in the glossary is not that clear to everyone. And the fact that this topic is on FAQ itself proving that. I think.

Anyway, the original question is solved. Thank you guys!
