Well, it's done. I successfully defended my dissertation yesterday. It was relatively painless, as these things go.

"Dr. Pope" still sounds weird.

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement. Now, I just need to find a job.

"Dr. Pope" still sounds weird.

But still better than Pope Doctor. I mean, then you get into all that weirdness about infallibility and kissing your ring and contributing significantly to knowledge and stuff.

Congratulations! It's a great feeling once you have finished. Although it is very anti-climatic when you receive your diploma in the mail.

I spent several years in Boise, and I think it is a great place to live. If I didn't have such a great opportunity in Oregon I would still be there.

Congratulations! It's a great feeling once you have finished. Although it is very anti-climatic when you receive your diploma in the mail.

Not for me. I'm sitting on the Lawn of Mr. Jefferson's University, make someone hand me my little piece of paper, and be draped in the funky colored hood. Ceremony, dammit!

Maybe. But the infallibility part would have been helpful in my defense:

Got another job interview today, at Winthrop University in South Carolina. I'm number three on their list.

Tenure Review

After you get your job, the next thing is Tenure Review. The advice I got was: don't throw away anything. Archive all your e-mails that deal with your job (especially those from students). You need to print everything out and bind it when it comes your time (and make sure you are familiar with the contents). In my field its supposed to be 40/40/20 Research/Teaching/Community Service, but it usually comes out as 90/10/0 being a Tier 2 Research University (everytime I help with High School Physics Day, I get quizzical looks from some professors wondering why there are high school students in the halls). We don't have merit pay for good teachers, now merit pay only comes from grabbing those big grants. Oh, well.
