Distance and Time - also abstractions?

A double move is more like jogging IMO.

Agreed. Ever see someone casually walk around in combat? Only in bad TV shows where they're completely overpowered, I assure you. The 6-square speed is the fastest you can go while still keeping control; the +2 from run is your physical max (or close to it).

You're onto something here with this time/space thing.

Now I'm not all about the big words but I've done some figurin' of my own, and I figure this "abstraction" thing (that's what you called it now eh?), helps make the game fun.

And that makes it okay in my book. ;)

Also, 4th seems to be trying in some cases to abstract issues to an extent. They refer to speed in squares, not in feet. They refer to rounds instead of number of seconds [although that has often been the case]. Most durations in combat are not in minutes, but until save or for the encounter ... so you don't have to worry about ticking off rounds, nor that they are 6 seconds long. You have 'rests' ... which are basically 5 minutes, and extended rests, which is the only one that really specifies the time, 6 hours unless you are elf/eladrin in which case it's 4. They might want to try to avoid these kinds of questions popping up by not being explicit about how long each round in combat is, or what the distance each square represents is. Out of combat stuff, like rests, isn't as bad ... it's only in turn based situations where you have the time dilation of everyone deciding what to do taking a lot longer than the round apparently takes, and the brain freeze can occur when thinking about all the stuff that happens in the short span of time.
