So, if there is going to be some reworking, I'm estimating that he gnome will go byebye. Although, I've enjoyed playing them, I could just use a halfling instead.

Races? Nobody has talked about races?

I'd like to see the half-elf go too. Yea, so the half-elf exists...jsut give it elf stats or human stats. Same for the half-orc. Then you've got room for more interesting "races."

One more thing: I'd like to see a couple human subraces by environment. That would be a lot more useful to many games. It simplifies a lot of the culture stuff the DM has to design.

If that's how it plays out, it will be a bitter disappointment for me. Gnomes always play a prominent role in what I do. On the other hand, unless I'm using a published campaign setting, I don't use any type of half-breeds.

I couldn't agree more on that.

I'm already sharpening my pitchfork on the potential news that Gnomes are being replaced. Of course, if that happens, a gnome supplement by a 3rd party will be around in short order, so I'm not too worried.

At worst, gnomes will be in the MM. I'm hoping we get a full online write-up in the interim before they show up statted out as a playable race in a book, myself. (And suspect that they will.)
