Edit - Having a further look around, I think I posted this in the wrong part of the messageboards. Perhaps I could prevail upon a friendly moderator to move this to the Creature Catalogue/Homebrew forum?
Edit - Perhaps not.
Those of you who recognise the title should know what to expect, although these were more inspired by Erikson's work than intended to accurately represent it. For the people wishing I would get to the point, D'ivers are shapeshifters in Steven Erikson's Malazan books who can take the form of multiple creatures - not more than kind (that we know, anyway
), but multiples of the same kind. Ryllandaras, for example, has as his alternate form a pack of seven (hope that's right) jackals.
Well, having never played an rpg or bought a book, I would appreciate the opinion of the fine folks at enworld on these two templates, especially with level adjustment and cr. They should not be too bad, you can see that most of the material is copied from the srd lycanthrope entry, and not very imaginatively. There were originally a few sample creatures too, but without wealth guidelines for npcs it seemed a bit pointless (yeah, yeah, I will be acquiring the books themselves too
). For the Plurithrope an updated werewolf lord/pack of wolves, Furblublub the Sahuagin necromancer/school of sharks (those have scary ability adjustments! especially when you are using the player's stats for their nemesis) and of course the Crazy Cat Lady
. For Polythrope, well, I was getting lazy by then, so just Sir Thomas the Creepy, a human paladin/swarm of centipedes.
If someone has done this already, ah well. I wrote them up before I had an enworld account, so...
Oh, and I left in at least one glaring typo because it amused me.
PLURITHROPE
A plurithrope is a shapeshifter similar to a lycanthrope, in that they can transform into animals. Unlike lycanthropes, however, a powerful plurithrope can assume the form of multiple animals at once. Otherwise, the condition is almost identical to lycanthropy.
CREATING A PLURITHROPE
“Plurithrope” is a template that can be added to any humanoid or giant (referred to hereafter as the base creature). The plurithrope template can be inherited (for natural plurithropes) or acquired (for afflicted plurithropes).
Size and Type: The base creature’s type does not change, but the creature gains the shapechanger subtype. The plurithrope takes on the characteristics of some type of carnivorous or omnivorous creature of the animal type (referred to hereafter as the base animal).
This animal can be any predator, scavenger, or omnivore whose size is within one size category of the base creature’s size (Small, Medium or Large for a Medium base creature). Plurithropes can also adopt a hybrid shape that combines features of the base creature and the base animal. A plurithrope’s hybrid form is the same size as the base animal or the base creature, whichever is larger.
A plurithrope uses either the base creature’s or the base animal’s statistics and special abilities in addition to those described here.
Hit Dice and Hit Points: Same as the base creature, hit points modified by constitution depending on form. If the base creature does not have as many hit dice as the base creature the plurithrope cannot take its animal form. Whenever a plurithrope achieves a number of hit dice equal to a multiple of the base animal’s hit dice, it may take the form of an additional animal. Example: A because a wolf has two hit dice, a 4th level plurithrope (pluriwolf?) could assume the form a pair of wolves, while a 6th level plurithrope would become a pack of three. Alternatively, a plurithrope could take ‘levels’ in their animal hit dice to increase the power of their animal form, much as a lycanthrope could, although in the plurithrope’s case this increases the time they must wait before gaining additional animal forms. The 6th level plurithrope in the above example (perhaps a warrior 5/wolf 1) might then take the form of two 3 hit dice wolves and would have to wait until 9th level before gaining another wolf, rather than at 8th level like most plurithropes.
Losing a Body: If one of the plurithrope’s animal bodies dies the plurithrope gains a number of negative levels equal to the hit dice of the body lost. The DC of the Fortitude save to remove these negative levels is 10+number of hit dice lost.
Speed: Same as the base creature or the base animal, depending on form. Hybrids use the base creature’s speed.
Armour Class: The base creature’s natural armour bonus increases by +2 in all forms. In hybrid form the plurithrope’s natural armour bonus is equal to the natural armour bonus of the base animal or the base creature, whichever is better.
Base Attack/Grapple: As the base creature, modified according to abilities and size in each form.
Attacks: Same as the base creature or base animal, depending on which form the plurithrope is using. A plurithrope in hybrid form gains two claw attacks and a bite attack as natural weapons.
These weapons deal damage based on the hybrid form’s size. A hybrid may attack with a weapon and a bite, or may attack with its natural weapons. The bite attack of a hybrid is a secondary attack.
Hybrid Size Claw Bite
Small 1d3 1d4
Medium 1d4 1d6
Large 1d6 1d8
Huge 2d4 2d6
Damage: Same as the base creature or base animal, depending on which form it is using, and also gains the special attacks described below.
A plurithrope’s hybrid form does not gain any special attacks of the base animal. A plurithrope spellcaster cannot cast spells with verbal, somatic, or material components while in animal form, or spells with verbal components while in hybrid form (although the feat Natural Spell could fix this problem).
Curse of Plurithropy (Su): Any humanoid or giant hit by a natural plurithrope’s bite attack in animal or hybrid form must succeed on a DC 15 Fortitude save or contract plurithropy. If the victim’s size is not within one size category of the plurithrope the victim cannot contract plurithropy from that plurithrope. Afflicted plurithropes cannot pass on the curse of plurithropy.
Special Qualities: A plurithrope retains all the special qualities of the base creature and the base animal, and also gains those described below.
Alternate Forms (Su): A plurithrope can shift into animal form as though using the polymorph spell on itself, though its gear is not affected, it does not regain hit points for changing form, only the specific animal form for the plurithrope can be assumed, and it may possess a number of different bodies as indicated above. It does not assume the ability scores of the animal, but instead adds the animal’s physical ability score modifiers to its own ability scores. A plurithrope can also assume a bipedal hybrid for with prehensile hands and animalistic features.
Changing to or from animal or hybrid form is a standard action. Changing from animal form requires that all bodies be in physical contact, even if only for an instant.
A slain plurithrope reverts to its humanoid form, although it remains dead. As a plurithrope is spread across multiple bodies, each reverts to an incomplete humanoid shape, often a disturbing sight. Separated body parts retain their animal form.
Afflicted plurithropes find this ability difficult to control. Use the rules for “Lycanthropy as an Affliction”
Damage Reduction (Ex): An afflicted plurithrope in animal or hybrid for has damage reduction 5/silver. A natural lycanthrope in animal or hybrid form has damage reduction 10/silver.
Plurithropic Empathy (Ex): In any form, plurithropes can communicate and empathise with normal and dire animals of their animal form. This gives them a +4 racial bonus on checks when influencing the animal’s attitude and allows the communication of simple concepts and (if the animal is friendly) commands, such as “friend,” “foe,” “flee,” and “attack.”
Low-Light-Vision (Ex): A plurithrope has low-light vision in any form.
Scent (Ex): A plurithrope has the scent ability in any form.
When a plurithrope is in its animal forms it also gains the following special quality:
One Mind (Ex): As a plurithrope in its animal form has only one mind operating all its bodies, it gains the benefits of a Hive Mind. If one body is aware of a particular danger, they all are. If one is not flat-footed, none of them are. None of a plurithrope’s bodies are considered flanked unless they all are. A plurithrope maintains perfect coordination amongst its components no matter how great their separation, as long as they are on the same plane of existence. If components of a plurithrope are no longer all on the same plane the plurithrope must choose which ones its consciousness resides in. All of these components must be on the same plane. The others become mindless (and probably hostile) until reunited with the plurithrope, which is similarly trapped in its animal form. The plurithrope should be careful when selecting which components to reside with, as for every component it is no longer in contact with it gains a negative level. These negative levels never result in actual level loss and they are never fatal, but they can also never be removed unless the plurithrope is reunited with itself. If all of a plurithrope’s components die on one plane, its soul flees to the plane on which the greatest number of its components reside.
Crystal spheres count as separate planes for these purposes.
Abilities: All plurithropes gain +2 to Wisdom. When in animal or hybrid form a plurithrope’s physical ability scores improve according to its kind. These adjustments are equal to the animal’s normal ability scores –10 or –11.
Skills: Any skill given in the animal’s description becomes a class skill for the plurithrope. In any form a plurithrope also has any racial skill bonuses of the base creature and the base animal. Conditional skill bonuses apply only in the associated back home (form, and ???).
Feats: A plurithrope receives Iron Will as a bonus feat.
Environment: Same as either the base creature or base animal.
Organisation: Solitary or pair, sometimes family (3-4), pack (6-10) or troupe (family plus related animals)
Challenge Rating: ???
Treasure: Standard.
Alignment: Any.
Advancement: Character class.

POLYTHROPE
A polythrope is a shapeshifter similar to a lycanthrope, in that they have the ability to transform into animals. However a polythrope transforms into not one animal, but many – an entire swarm of creatures.
CREATING A POLYTHROPE
“Polythrope” is a template that can be added to any humanoid or giant (referred to hereafter as the base creature). The polythrope template can be inherited (for natural polythropes) or acquired (for afflicted polythropes).
Size and Type: The base creature’s type does not change, but the creature gains the shapechanger subtype. The polythrope takes on the characteristics of some creature of the swarm subtype (referred to hereafter as the base swarm).
This animal can be any creature of size tiny or smaller. Polythropes cannot adopt a hybrid form.
A polythrope uses either the base creature’s or the base swarm’s statistics and special abilities in addition to those presented here.
Hit Dice and Hit Points: As the base creature, hit points modified by constitution depending on form. A polythrope assumes the form of a swarm with hit dice equal to the base creature.
Space/Reach: Refer to the entry for the base swarm’s hit dice. If the polythrope has fewer hit dice it only takes up five feet in swarm form. For every multiple of the base swarm’s hit dice the polythrope possesses it takes up another ten feet.
Speed: Same as the base creature or the base swarm, depending on form.
Armour Class: Unchanged.
Base Attack/Grapple: As the base creature, modified according to abilities and size in each form. A swarm cannot grapple (?).
Attacks: Same as the base creature or swarm, depending on form. A swarm gains a special swarm attack, automatically dealing an amount of damage shown in the table below to any creature whose space they occupy at the end of their movement, without requiring an attack roll or suffering a miss chance from concealment or cover.
