DM Advice needed re: unfortunate character death [long]

Bring out your dead!

Or you could REALLY punish them by introducing a little bit o deus ex machina into your campaign in the form of a Good Drow Ranger named Drizz'd who shows up and magically fixes EVERY POSSIBLE SITUATION in the favor of the PCs, completely ruining the game for them, causing you to be forever known as the DEMON DM! HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!

4) Had the player who's character bought it remembered or known he was damaged, his character would have logically used his wand of cure light wounds a few times, or bugged the party healer for some TLC.

5) Now the player who lost the character is fine with rolling up a new one, but the player who maintained the hit points tally feels incredibly remorseful and guilty over the whole affair.

In light of these two points...I would have him mark off the necessary charges on his wand and let him know that he is ok this time.

But from now on the precident is that ...if you die from carelessness or failure to remember to get healed or heal yourself...you are dead.

OK, first I want to thank everyone for their comments and advice.

The players all wanted to resolve this ASAP, so today we got together and had a bit of a talk about the chain of events that happened and how they conspired to kill the party rogue. The clerical error *cough* was just one element in an unusual set of events, which are not all that likely to reoccur anytime soon, especially now that everyone will be watching.

Interestingly, some good has come of all of this. The campaign started more or less as a collection of dungeons strung together with a simple plot. Nobody had any real reason to continue doing this, as few players had any concrete goals for their characters. But now suddenly there's a strong motive to do whatever it takes to get the rogue resurrected! It's nice to see the players start to pull together as a group with a little direction! So I'm inclined to let things stand, for a more interesting and cohesive game.

At the risk of sounding overly light-hearted about this, the player of the party rogue has agreed to consider this a character building experience *slaps thigh* and roll up a new one, at least until the characters can find a cleric of sufficiently high level to bring the rogue back. I've tried to encourage him to try playing a character he's never done before, and after seeing the rest of the group come together ingame with the goal of getting his rogue resurrected, he's pretty keen on seeing where this goes. Also, no one particularly likes the idea of rewinding the game and replaying it with a different ending. It kind of makes the whole threat of death easy to ignore.

Finally, I've found the quote about native outsiders (FRCS pg. 18) and Tiberious was right, as strictly by the rules they can actually be raised. Hence the "native" part of "native outsider". Thanks for pointing that out!

Cheers everyone, and thanks again!

stupid error

A character should never die to a "book-keeping" error, which this obviously was.

Both the cleric, and the rogue just simply forgot that the rogue was seriously wounded.

Characters dying because of "in game" stupidity is fine.

Characters dying because of "out of game" stupidity isn't fun for anybody.

Ditto. no sane party who depends on the rogues ability to safely disarm traps (cause after all the rest can find them 100% of the time without his help) would allow the rogue to take point when they had a healing wand at hand.

also if the rogue is an Aasmir or Tiefling then reread the entry. they are native outsiders assuming you are playing in Fearun and can be raised normally. if thats the case don't let another book keeping error kill off a valueable character. if not the case then just disreguard this.

bookkeeping error

As a DM, if the player was under the impression that his or her character was unwounded but it turned out that the character was obviously in need of healing, and there was plenty of time in game for such healing to happen, I'd allow an intelligence check DC 10 to have used the wand previously. But only if it were very obvious that the character would have done so.
