DM: Do you allow Mongoose Publishing Books into your game?

If Mongoose Publishing doesn't advertise who actually wrote the book on the front cover, then they don't get any credit for who wrote the book.

Instead, they get lumped into "It's Mongoose, and the books I've seen of theirs are horrible."

If the Slayer's Guide to Dragons had "by Gary Gygax and J Creffield" on the front cover, that would have a draw all of its own - but it doesn't.

Cheers!

I understand completely! I mean, my God, how can Mongoose expect me to OPEN THE COVER to see who wrote it? Cheers!

After reading some of the dreck they've put out, it makes me less inclined to try and filter through all their published material to find the fine piece of work some others seem to claim is in there somewhere.

After a few particularly uninspired products, I quit even browsing through Mongoose at my FLGS altogether. Who wants to waste their time?

If one of my players brings a product to my attention, of course I'll consider it, but for the most part Mongoose has established itself to me as a low quality, high volume, "we'll print anything to make a buck," company. YMMV.

Geez, if it's that easy Stephen King shouldn't put his name on the cover

I only own 1 book of Mongoose's - Chaos Magic, and haven't used it, though I could see myself using it if the situation presented itself (which it might). None of their other books have really interested me, though I might take a look at Quint Sorcerer.

I tend to use a lot of Mystic Eye Games' books (I write for them so I get a lot of them for free, anyway, but I really like a lot of them, too), and I have several Bastion books, and a few FFG books. I also am using some modules from Monkeygod.

I don't own any Green Ronic, or Sword & Sorcery stuff. It's not generic enough for my game.

I haven't been terribly impressed by the Mongoose stuff I've bought or read, so I haven't bought much. If somebody asked to use something from one of their books in my campaign, I'd have to borrow the book to read it carefully before I said yes or no.

Of course, I own far more d20 stuff than anybody else in my group, so it's kind of moot. :)

As for putting author's names on the cover -- why shouldn't a publisher put 'em on there? If there are too many authors (e.g., a book of submitted monsters), that's one thing; but when one or two people did most of the writing, I think it's silly to not give credit where credit is due. I have favorable impressions of publishers (e.g., Malhavoc, GR, SJG, etc.) mainly because they pick good authors to write their books; if they picked some hack to write their next book, the publisher's name on the book wouldn't magically improve the writing (the publisher's editors and developers/re-writers might, but there's only so much editing can do).

I'm still mad at Mongoose for putting out the absolutely abysmal .pdf "The Slayers Guide to Winter Wolves". I could have gotten more inspiration by burning my $5! Really it's true.

I also have their Seas of Blood which I thought was okay. The ship to ship combat system presented in there just seemed wonky though. Most ships could turn every so many feet, usualy less than 100, but the scale suggested for ship to ship combat was 100/inch.....? I also didn't like that it glossed over cannons, something I consider pretty essential for seafaring/swashbuckling type campaigns.

(Admitedly I never actually tried the rules, just read them.)

I guess I'm the strange one here. I have lots of mongoose stuff and like a lot of it, especially the slayer's guides. They're like "The ecology of the ****" articles but longer.

I like the flavour of Mongoose stuff - much grittier and better suited to my British sensibilities than WoTC - but all crunch has to be cleared through me, since Mongoose are totally incapable of balancing it themselves - almost 2eish.
