I was shocked when a couple of the players balked, saying that it was too much to pay. $5 for 5 to 8 hours of entertainment is too much to pay?

A good DM gets just as much fun out of a session as the players, so how come its the players who have to pay the DM?

Obviously, they do not have to. But they're no longer going to have a dedicated gaming room. (And I'm no longer going to be paying $300+ a month to play D&D.) I am, BTW, only the DM for one of three, sometimes four, weekly sessions that use my game room.

So, I'd pay to help the DM run a better game or something like that but I would not pay specifically to game.

I couldn't agree more. :D and I have done the above, even in PbP a couple of times to get the game started or what not.

I know that their was a advertisement in dragon/dungeon a few months ago about a online website that was going to have paid DM for PbP and Chat based games.

The ad didn’t mention how much they where paying their DM/GMs though. :\

A lot.
Boo-hoo.
That was my first thought too. But der Kluge is actually referring to someone who does this legit... I can't remember who it was either, though. I remember the conversation quite well.

Interesting results to the poll. . . looks like more than a third of players would actually pay to play. I'm not surprised at this - I have always known that I would pay to play, and it's interesting to see that others would, too.

And if the $20 voters in particular would like to let me have their names and addresses, I'll see what I can arrange ........

In both groups I'm with there is more than one of us who can or will DM so this is not an issue - it can often be more a case of trying to get the chance to DM.

I try to bring snacks, etc when I can as that is kind of payment towards the DM's work.

If my DM was like Jeff in the above post I would have not problem paing a weekly rate of 5-$10 since he has all the stuff and is willing to loan books. He has a great setup and it is costing extra for him to maintain that space. I think it would be rude (knowing that it is costing a friend extra money) not to offer to chip in even if he didn't ask.

I know of two DMs that run weekly games @ the game store they work at and that they are on the clock when DM there. I think they get paid $10+/hr I would guess.
