DM intervention

Giving a player a free Raise is something I've never done and never will do again. This was a unique situation. I normally have three guys in my group. We have a Scion (Harkainin), a Knight of the Left Hand (Ryka), the wizard Thoraval, and Luvin the rogue (my PC). Two of the group members were absent so I asked the player if he wanted to control his character and the other two as well. I mean no offense by this cuz I love the guy to death, but he is a little slow to figure things out and a scion and a knight can be difficult to play. I think it was bogging things down and there where several other mistakes that wouldn't of happened under our normal circumstances. We ended up just bagging it for that night (a bit to late), to many mistakes were being made (forgetting feats, certain spells, etc.).

As for the darkness, I described it as "a huge, black opaque sphere slowly creeping toward you." Then they started appearing all over (D'gran can do this at will). I think it threw him off, I should have secretly done a spellcraft check right there. An elf who's lived 115 years and is an 8th level wizard with a 19 int should be able to know Darkness when he sees it (or doesn't see it). At any rate, he feels he shouldn't be playing a PC with that int because he doesn't know what a person that smart should be doing (it's his 1st wizard ever, he usually makes fighters). I want him to keep playing Thoraval, we have a great storying line going. I refuse to be lenient as a DM, and I never will be again. I think I'll incorporate more Int checks every now and then and maybe drop some hints that I feel a PC would have picked up on. I've never had a player discuss something with me for over a week (hardly for five minutes), so I decided maybe it was a messed up situation and we could work something out.
