DM looking for advice

First Post
I'm a new DM, and new to the whole genre in general. I've been running D&D 5e mines of phandelver, and will be moving on to the Prince of the Apocalypse campaign book after that. Any advice on how to run that particular campaign?

If you're mainly looking for advice regarding that specific campaign, rather than DMing advice in general, you may want to re-post your thread in the D&D 5th Edition forum, or ask a mod to move it, as it's more likely to come to the attention of people who have run the campaign that way. Also, including the campaign name in the thread title will help in getting specific advice.

This may sound obvious, but....

READ the whole adventure 1st.

Once you've done that then consider any alterations you wish to make.
Also take into account both the players & characters that will be going through this.

This is always sound advice, but particularly relevant with PotA since you're going to be dealing with multiple factions of bad guys - even though they all serve the same master, as individuals the leaders of the factions will each have their own unique personal reasons for doing so and their own ideas about how to best accomplish their master's goals. Which may well bring them not just into competition with each other but perhaps even direct conflict.
As a relatively new DM, if you decide that there's tension or conflict between the various cults, it can be hard to wrap your head around a seething nest of vipers like that and keep the character and motivations of each of the bad guys straight in your head.

As said, read the whole thing, take notes, you may even want to make a mind map of all the things going on. Also consider putting together a checklist of all the plots and quests and rumors so you can keep track of what you have revealed to the party, wish I had done that.

Oh, and don't railroad them. Give them choices. If they happen to stumble into the Halls of the Hunting Axe at 5th level, let them.

Browse the 5th Edition forum and look for PotA threads.
- One person is posting his campaign as it unfolds.
- One poster has a list of mistakes and typos in the book.
- Anything like "How did you expand PotA for your campaign?"

Go ahead and use anything you like; it's all put up so other people can have a good time.
