dm looking for help

well, yesterday was an extreme failure, everyone was so bored, including myself, that we stopped playing half way through. :(
sometimes this happens i know, and sometimes we have really great sessions that the players want to continue playing into the night, but i was hoping this will be one of the good sessions since there were new players, oh well i guess i won't see these two at my gaming table again. :(
just wanted to get this off of me, no need for sympathy, but as stated before i still want suggestions on how to avoid those incidents.

There can be any number of suggestions about how to run a game. However, I think the main thing is to isolate the problems you had yesterday. What do you think went wrong? Why were people bored?

i really can't say for sure.
we stated playing in the morning so maybe we were still a bit sleepy (i doubt it, we started at about 11:30).
i was thinking of uniting the new characters with the rest of the group by having them meet up on the way to bash a few minor criminals (very poor job on my part playing it out).
people weren’t showing much will to play (especially the new players).
i did not have much preparation before the game.
the two new players were girls, which is unusual for us but i don't see why this should make any problems.
maybe we were a too big group to handle.
i can't really put my finger on it but something was defiantly wrong, i myself felt below-the-floor down after that session.
any general suggestions from more experienced DMs would be welcome.
