DM/Player participation

Players in my game (which I may be a player in myself)...

Every one of my players owns their own dice, character sheet(s), and PHB. And, uh... that's it.

We don't have campaign journals or anything like that - the most they do is discuss outside of the game what previously happened along with future strategies. They might read some campaign material if I hand any out.

All of them have their own dice, and 2/3 of them remember to bring those dice. :) All my players but 1 or 2 ask me to hold their character sheets for them... I really don't mind, since the players who forget to bring their dice also often forgot to bring their sheets.

Usually I get anywhere from 1 to 3 players (out of 6 to 7 players) who buy their own PHB.

If you couldn't tell, I run a very casual game.

But I do think how much time and money a player invests in the game is one measure of how involved the player is.
I have to agree w/Umbran. How the player plays the game is most important measure of how involved they are. Everything else is a distant second.

I would not say "distant second". There's quite a difference in running a game for players who "just" show up and players who come prepared with their own material (which also allows them to look up stuff in advance), write parts of the setting info or campaign journal, etc.

Note that none of what you mention is actual play.

I agree that it's great when players contribute to the campaign setting, or, as in the case of my own campaign, when they write the Story Hour here on ENWorld.

Why would I limit the question to the actual play session? Any DM knows that there's more to the game, and especially more to running a game than just the actual play session.
