DM really messing up our party

BEEP!
We were fighting an evil blackguard Skeletal Warrior type from a completely unfriendly to pc's dungeon crawl from Necromancer Games.

You attacked Saracek? Your fault. That guy is a TPK monster. Bet your party was warned. I don't remember him exactly, but his sword was wounding and he... well. Let's say he could kill a munchkinised lvl7 group onehanded while reading newspaper.

BEEP!
Instant death no save

Sounds like death knell. What do you expect from baddies?

Then you killed him. Well. You're the first lvl5 group I hear about that managed to kill him. Your DM WAS nice to you. And he pulled his punches. What do you expect, this is a necromancergames dungeon? There ARE monsters that are not supposed to be defeated at once or at all.

Btw: your magic items seem tough. But can you explain to me how you deal 18 points of damage per shot with a bow to a SKELETON?

Now this is in rules :D

Ranting stopped. Now: You are right, he cannot use spells or so as AoOs. But knowing Saraceks stats... I'd rather see him casting spells then bashing the players to pieces. Check the necromancerboards for near TPKs caused by him. He killed more than one paladin with one attack.

How do you have fun in a miserable game like that? You quit, and go look for a decent DM. It's the only way to go about it. I have yet to be in a game I had serious ssues with that I wouldn't have been better off leaving earlier instead of later - less frustration and bad feelings on everyone's part, because they NEVER get better if you stick with it. Ever. The only thing that makes bad players and DM's reconsider is loosing a game, and that only some of the time.

Saracek, a CR 11 creature, only has 100 hp. I bet your DM was halfing your damage (as he should have) without telling you.

The Skeletal guy comes up and hits me for some special screw you thing for instant death no save. Then he tries to raise me as an undead.

Sounds to me like the DM was "ad libbing" his way through this. Saracek the Fallen has no "instant death/no save" attack. And he cannot raise a corpse as undead either.

Also- where did the ring and wand come from? Saracek possesses neither.

Sorry, Grazzt, I don't remember exactly if Saracek could cast, but the flamestrike sounds like that...

I think this was a deathknell spell. (lvl1)

Huhm, does anyone remember if that guy got something to haste himself? That would have explained 60ft movement plus casting death knell as well as using a wand together with other things each round.

Saracek can cast two first level blackguard spells. That's all, unless the DM gave him additional blackguard levels or additional class levels in something else.

Deathknell is on the blackguard list...but it allows a save.

Agreed Darklone.

Remember this is a "First Edition Feel" dungeon. Remember, you dont always have to fight everything ya meet. You are supposed to run away when you are outclassed, outgunned, etc. (2e corrupted this by leading players by the nose and encouraging DM hand-holding, but that is a topic for another thread entirely :)).

Yeppers. CR 11, especially Saracek, should hand a 5th-level party's ass to them. Course, if the above post is accurate, it sounds more like bad party tactics (to an extent) than Saracek doing his thing.

Any monster can be defeated, but perhaps not on the first go. First Edition (as I mentioned above) taught you to hit, run if your are near death, return when healed with more firepower, and hit again. Repeat if necessary. :)

Well- actually Saracek doesnt gain the standard skeletal immunities to weapons, but he does have damage reduction. :D

Whaaaat? CR11 and no skeletal immunities?

Sheesh, I would have never dared to insult Necromancergames of creating weak monsters, but this is ... clearly a mistake ;)?

And the DR didn't help him against GMWed arrows...

But still I think: Your DM was nice not to kill off the whole party at once.

Didn't you meet some guys who warned you or heard rumours about him?
