No offense to said person or people, but whoever it is that decides the colors of the books and what covers they should have should just be fired. They apprently don't understand anything at all about branding. They're screwing new players up and decreasing sales by going every which way with the covers.

I have never heard of the colour of a book screwing new players, and that it is affecting sales at all.

Yes consistency in could would be nice, but to me consistency of the quality of the written product and putting an index in the book would be a lot better. Once they have achieved that, then let them worry about the cover.

They've already explained that Races of Eberron didn't have an Eberron cover for better sales, is it also a sale reason? Does that mean that, from now on, every WotC book will have ugly brown covers "for sales reasons" ?

Most likley. In better players, there is an ingrained feeling of 'stay out of DM materials' that wotc wants to get rid of. If it was blue, fewer players would pick it up rightfully thinking, not my concern. But the brown cover casts doubt on that initial thought and increases the chance is bought. .

In my experience, "in better players," there's an ingrained feeling of "sometimes I DM, so I buy every stinking book on the market." :D

Anyway, Charles Ryan said the cover would be blue(ish), not brown. ;)

The brown cover you've seen was an early mockup. The actual cover is, in fact, the same dark blue (at least, it's blue to my eyes) as Unearthed Arcana.

Thanks Charles! I ask this same question on Wizards support a few days ago. This is the response I received:

Using Blue for books most used my a DM rather than players was never an official thing, nor was it a rule that only DM's could use them. All books, including the DMG are informative assets for ALL D&D players. Afterall a DM is playing D&D while he is DM'ing.

At least, you gave us a straight answer.

The DM is a player, therefore all books are for all players?

That's like saying: "A rocket scientist is, after all, a human being. Therefore, books for rocket scientists are meant to be read by all people." - Yeah, right.
