It just seems full of stuff experienced DMs don't really need.
Sounds good for someone who's never DMed before. But that ain't me.
I've been DMing since 1981, and I want my RPGs to come complete with settings and scenarios.

Hell, I expect it.

My guess is that the swordmage is for the FR campaign guide. PHB2 is supposed to be a 2009 release, and Rich Baker has a swordmage character in an FR novel coming out in 2008 (in fact, I believe the novel's title is Swordmage).
But would they put such a "generic" class in the FR book? It the arcane manual will really happen, that's a more likely venue.

I think the DMG seems to be getting crammed with less useful stuff, seeing that it only appears to be 224 pages (while the PHB is 320 and the MM 288, at the same price).

I agree with the applause. A book on "how to create adventures" needs at least one adventure in it. It shouldn't have to take up much space, either- the web published adventures were often only 4 pages long, and many of those were pretty decent.

Yeah, it is pretty much the standard for GM-specific RPG books. I'm a little disappointed that the "starter" town isn't one from D&D history, but it's still nice to have some sample adventures, locations, etc. for the new edition.

The swordmage sounds an awful lot like it could be a bladesinger class for Forgotten Realms.

Adventure and town setting in the core books? Another nod to Basic and Expert D&D. :) Of course, Fallcrest isn't Threshold, but...

Cheers,
Cam

: "We're planning to include a fully detailed "starting town" in the 4E DMG. It's a wonderful time-saver for DMs who need a ready-to-play town around which to base a D&D campaign. We tried something similar in the 3rd Edition DMG II with Saltmarsh, and we learned a lot from that experiment. The town we're thinking about for the 4E DMG is even more iconic than Saltmarsh. Can you guess what it is?" underline added

So there seems to be a change. I am not complaining, just saying...

I agree (though I didn't really start DMing till about 86, before was just messing around).

But KM is also right: please do a good job. But of course that is true with all of this.
