DMing Software for Laptop

reveal

Adventurer
I am looking at getting a laptop for the table. My question is: What DMing software should I be looking at? What are my options?

Does anyone have a list of programs available to help a DM out?

Here is my list of programs for the DM. Basicaly im agreeing with Maraxel, but I figure two voices saying the same thing might have more weight. All very usefull.

TableSmith - Extremely good and usefull program. Shareware - try for free, but if you use it (cant imagine not finding it usefull) then send him a few bucks. He has been updating it fairly regularly with new features. http://www.mythosa.net/

JH NameGen Gold - Usefull names list program. See Maraxle's sig above for a link.

E-Tools - Im sure you already know about this one.

Fractal Mapper - This one isnt free... but its soooo usefull. Its a great(read easy to use & powerfull) program with a LOT of great features for the DM making his own world. There is a scripting ability in it to do some fantastic things. I made a map of a new continent, Simply clicked various spots on the map where i wanted citys, and the program automaticaly generated random info for each city that I can use or edit. With info like town rulers - and tons of other stuff. All done automaticaly and in minutes. You can even open a campaign journal to see all the info on the whole map in one atlas. **ALSO** he is about to update this program to ver. 7.0 if you buy 6.0(current version) before 7 is out you get a free update to the new vers. Also includes a 3D fractal mapper http://www.nbos.com/

Some other interesting programs / sites to check out:

Interactive Dungeon http://www.geocities.com/trainz_ca/ID/

DM Genie http://www.dmgenie.com/

PC Gen http://pcgen.sourceforge.net/
or http://www.codemonkeypublishing.com/

Klooge Werks http://www.kloogeinc.com/werks/

MapMage http://www.mapmage.com/

And check out Screen Monkey .. by the same folks as fractal mapper.. http://www.nbos.com/products/screenmonkey/screenmonkey.htm

Hope you can find some usefull stuff. Good luck and good gaming.

 Chaz

Some other good* tools:

TableSmith - Generate names, towns, etc. (see my .sig :))
Campaign Sage - Cyclopedic reference for spells, monsters, and charts/tables (needs to be updated for 3.5 yet)
DM's Familiar - Reference tool, combat manager, outlining tool
Roleplaying Master - Character generator, combat manager, mapper, a lot more...

I'm sure others will add to this list (this question comes up often enough that it might be a good candidate for a "sticky" note...). Personally, I also use "standard" programs like Excel, Winamp, and ActionOutline as well.

*Disclaimer: I'm the author of TableSmith and Campaign Sage

I like to think that Campaign Suite has a LOT of robust DMing tools available - and of course they are tied together in every way.

Free trial is available, and it's also available now in retail stores world-wide.

Kinda depends on what you want it for.

There are several "DM Suites" programs out there: DM's Familiar (mine), Campaign Suite, Roleplaying Master, DM Genie, Crystal Ball (Mac only). These programs do things like:

PC/NPC Generation: For making characters (DM's Familiar does not do character generation)

Combat Management: Tracking initiative, spell durations, make attack/damage rolls, making skill/saves, etc. Anything that makes your combat go faster and work smoother (Campaign Suite does not combat management)

Reference Tools: Putting spells, skills, feats, monsters, rules, etc. at your fingertips so that you don't have to carry around the books and so that you can find things quickly

"Note" Management: To organize your campaign world notes, adventure, world history - basically anything text based.

Dice Roller: To roll that 10d6 fireball or the 18d6 fall of a cliff easily

Those are the main things the "suites" try and do. A good pogram at the game table can really improve gaming - making the game run smoother and faster.

All of these programs (?) have free demos. Try 'em out and see what you like.
-----------------------------------------
Then there are some standalone programs that try to do one thing. Maybe it's something the suites don't do, or maybe it's something they do better than the suites:

Character Generation: E-Tools, PCGen

Random Table Generation: Tablesmith (love it), JH NameGen Gold gets mentioned a lot

"Note" Management: Word, MyInfo

Mapping: That's a whole other thread

Are you planning to update it for 3.5? (DM's Familiar)
The program itself is already updated for 3.5. Data-entry is going on as we speak. As soon as it's all done, a download will be available to update monsters, spells, feats, skills, etc. with the 3.5 info.
