I made my own board, too. Blank white cardboard, ruled up a grid on each side, then contacted both sides (no access to a laminator). Works well!

When I did not have enough table space to spread my battle mat and have all players sit around it, a whiteboard on an easel was a fair alternative. I don't bother with it when I have enough space for the table/mat combo.

However, it was nice for keeping lists/info in front of the players.

For initiative, I prefer my system of a narrow corkboard strip that I push thumbtacks into, with PC initials marked on them.

It can be a useful way to put up reference information for the whole group, particularly initiative. I don't think it's a good option to represent combat positioning because I've found few people can draw on a vertical whiteboard readably and in proper scale. Really, a secondary tool, can be useful if your venue has one in an appropriate position, but I wouldn't make major changes in the game to accommodate it.

Are you referring to
a) something on the wall to write on, or
b) something flat on the table to draw maps and put minis on, or
c) something else

If a), then "no".

If b), then "other - gridded chalkboard elevated above table".

If c), please elaborate.

Any of the above. :)

I use a white board if I have access to one for initiative tracking mostly. It's nice, but not necessary.

I suppose if I had no map available, a white board would be better than nothing.

(all the questions make me feel like Green Eggs & Ham this morning! ;) )

Nope, no whiteboard. Handouts, yes, and notepads, but that is it.

We prefer an uncluttered gaming environment. :D

We use a whiteboard instead of a battlemat (it's scored with a square grid). We've used that or an unmarked one (for HERO) for over 15 years.

For using it for other info, no.
