Make it an entrance to a secret realm where the gods before the gods live (or something in that vein) which sets the stage for a following adventure.

Dimensional Bridge

- Two blue-black 10' poles. They will always stay vertical, and point to the direction of gravity (if there is no gravity or it is extremely weak they will stay horizontal in relation to each other). They can otherwise be moved easily. If placed exactly 10' apart from each other a vortex of fantastical colours will form between them.

If someone steps into the vortex he will find himself behind the scenes of the multiverse. There will be a trillion times trillion similar vortices for him to choose from. Each will take him to a different dimension or universe. Once the person who first entered the vortex leaves through one of them he will find the poles next to him and the vortex closed. For others to move with him they must enter after him, and leave through one of the vortices before him, or otherwise be left behind in the originating location or be trapped within the vortex dimension.

To know which vortex within the vortex dimension takes to which dimension or universe one must possess the locator, which looks like a blue-black shiny rock, which the PC's would have to search for in the treasure room. ;)

The Medallion of the Deathless

- This simple coarse steel medallion has the image of a scythe broken in half. Whoever wears it will become invisible to death.

The wearer can not be killed, can not kill, can not see death, can not see the dead, can not speak of death, can not remember anyone dead whom he might have previously known, and can not even understand the concept of death. For him death and the dead are a non-existant thing.

Any action which the weaver does which would normally cause death will not. Removing the amulet doesn't change the nature of actions done when wearing it.

The legendary "Owner's Manual", a tome of knowledge describing the creation of the universe, how reality was formed, how to manipulate it, and when the warranty runs out.

"Note: This Universe packed by weight, not volume. Some settling may have occurred."

OR

The secret documents spelling out the divorce settlement between Bahamut and Tiamat, and who was *actually* supposed to get custody of the kids.

1.) Have the treasure be the Ultimate Portal to All Other Realities.

2.) Contrive events so that they have to enter the Portal.

3.) The moment they do, use your phone to signal the troop of hired actors--dressed meticulously as the party's characters--hidden out on the back porch.

4.) "Their characters" suddenly burst into the room, ready to engage in combat.

5.) As the DM, offer the heroes a liter of your favorite carbonated beverage.

6.) When the actors exit, tell the party that their characters return through the portal bearing the Elixer of Life.

Well...that's what I'd do.

The Violet Banner

- This magnificent violet banner exudes a menacing atmosphere. Anyone touching it will hear the faraway sounds of a battlefield, the cries of the dying, clashing of swords, shouting of soldiers, horses galloping, bows firing..

The banner must be held by the off-hand for any of the effects to work (unless the character is one-handed).

The wielder becomes immune to the attacks of anyone below 15th level.

The wielder gets an extra saving throw ('against magic') against anything which normally allows a saving throw.

The wielder gets a saving throw ('against magic') against anything which specifically denies saving throws.

The wielder becomes immune to the first three attacks against him that day.

The wielder receives +10 to charisma.

The wielders AC is improved by 5.

By the same token, you pull a "Greatest American Hero" on them...give them something super powerful, but with no instructions. Then they are constantly trying to figure out what things do, sometimes to comical and tragic circumstances. Also, reminiscent of Heward's Mystical Organ. And by that I mean the one that is similar to a piano.

Alternatively, have it be like the suitcase form pulp fiction - even after achieving the task they still don't get to find out what's inside it. Have Torm and/or Bahamut appear and take the case, saying that its too dangerous for human hands, but thank the party with a Wish each. Then you can have fun with wishes.

(See that other thread where the rogue got jobbed by his DM)

Hay I'm that rogue and let me say that would not be very fun.

Anyway bake to the question at hand. The idea of a library with all books ever made would be cool but I would instead make the treasure so
something a little more unique.

I suggest a lifeform of pure energy. This lifeform would have been alive since before the beginning and has seen and knows all that has ever happened or will ever happen. He is a watcher of time, fate and everything. Let him offer each party member one question. The answer to which only that one party member is told and can never share with the others. Of course as with anyone that can see the future he will give them the whole "this is but one outcome and may come to change" warning if there question pertains to the future. Once they have each received there answer the lifeform teleports the party outside the entrance and when they turn around the entrance is gone. I think that this would be a great way of rewarding the party with something fun and enjoyable that wouldn't give the party a crazy powerful item that you will now have to deal with. In some ways I would find this to be more enjoyable than the magic item because it gives you a since of being part of something greater because you know something that no other person knows.

I was thinking more Wizard of Oz. You get to talk to "the maker and controller of everything" but find out its just some old and fat dude with a microphone.

One other possibility that struck me was the demon in the centre of the earth from Piers Anthony's Xanth series. Its been a decade or more since I read it...but something along of the lines of all magic in the world is simply residual radiation from a being of pure magic. The demon is bound (by other demons, naturally) until someone frees it by speaking the words "I free you". At which point, everyone dies in a big cave in, magic is gone from the world etc etc. Interesting moral conundrum for any "Good" characters re: unjust imprisonment etc. Also...the demon was guarded by the most awesome monster that doesn't exist (afaik) in D&D: The Brain Coral.
