DMs -- How Open Are You to Suggestions?

Mordane76

First Post
There is a thread on-going in House Rules on the nature of PrC which has brought a question to mind that I don't think it would be appropriate to posit in that thread, nor in that forum.

How open are you to player input on such things are new creatures, new player races, new PrC, new PC classes, and items?

Do you consider yourself easily approachable about such changes, or do you think you come off as iron-fisted?

I love it, it means the player is thinking about his/her character between games if nothing else! And as long as the player is willing to be flexible as well (in case I need to change or remove the suggested addition if it proves to be a problem) I usually just go for it.

I agree, but I tend to be a little iron-fisted, and often tone things down a little. One the other hand, if a player is looking for a PrC, and can't find one that fits, I'll create one!

i think i'm open to player input...

i'm really not sure! nothing like this has ever come up in a game i've run...

we have several DMs in my group, so whomever is running the next game will state which game/game system/setting it is, and go from there. no one has ever really asked for anything in particular along those lines, like a player saying, "i'd really like to play...(whatever)."

i should point out that whatever game/game system/setting i've decided upon, i let the players determine what type of characters/group they would like to play, and create the game from there

If a player is that interested in "buying into" the campaign, that is a wonderful thing!

I try to be as open as possible.

Things would be awfully dull if a DM didn't listen to player input.

Player: "I open the door."

DM: "No you don't."

Not much fun if you ask me.

Alright, seriously, I try to be as open as possible. Good ideas can come from anywhere. If a player suggests something and I think, "Great Scott! What a brilliant idea! How perfectly it fits into everything I'm doing in this campaign! How easy it will make my job! What acclaim and adoration it will bring me!" I'm not going to throw it away just because some player thought it up.

I'm going to pretend I made it up and steal all the credit. Heh.

Wait, no, I'll be serious for a second. I promise.

Yes, be open. It costs nothing to listen. My campaign is not going to be threatened because players are coming up with ideas. I can always reject them -- but I think it's important to listen.

Very open. So far I have a PC who designed a weapon for his druid, hasn't used it yet since its an Exotic Weapon, and a player who designed a spell.

I encourage the players to add what the want. Its as much my game as it is theirs.

this is the core of my stance on the other thread. Except WRT PrCs, which I see as almost soley a DM's responisbility.

Heck, and I'm open to PCs asking about stuff, just not needing to be co-creators, or expecting that option.
