*raises hand* Umm, Felon, I'd like to see it to? :)

Actually, some of the stuff in jerichothebard's sounds interesting as well, and I'm always on the lookout for new house rules. I'd like to request a copy of that, I have a gmail account so space really isn't an issue.

Heh. Not so sure what's so tantalizing about that ToC I posted...but cross your fingers, because my browser didn't crash this time. Hope it's worth the wait. I would appreciate any specific suggestions on material I should add, remove, or clarify.

what do you give to your players when starting a new campaign, is more of what i'm getting at? :)

especially if you have new (at least, to you as a DM) players in the group?
I list what player resources will be accepted WITHOUT prior approval (other sources simply require approval before being allowed into the game.) House rules. House rules covers a lot of territory but tarts with character generation rules, covers alignment issues, and then a few added rules and some that are interpreted differently than may be in the books are corrected. It now also includes my "D&D Manifesto" which is just a list of a dozen or two principles of how I try to approach the game and how I prefer/expect players to approach the game. And, of course, it includes an exhortation to players to not fear to try something new and different - but also to not take that encouragement TOO far. Oh yeah, depending on the setting and the intended nature of the campaign it may include a little bit of setting overview and/or recent history.

Strangely, my last group had several PCs who didn't care to read the handout. However that wouldn't stop me from doing it again.

I like to write the handout after having an initial meeting where I learn about the what the characters will be. Because I include specific background (oo, plot hooks) for each player based upon skills and abilities and classes. So the handout includes

Local background
Regional background
World background
Interesting local places
Interesting local NPCs
places to buy stuff
rumors
legends
customized feats and options available for this game

I usually put any restrictions, requirements and other information in a separate doc. I.e. what books besides core are allowed.

One really good thing to include? Your email and cell phone. I always format the document with a header or footer too. When it runs to 20-30 pages, the players need those numbers in there. ;)

Great job Felon! The Shadow Company reminds me of Erikson's Bridgeburners or Cook's Black Company. I like it-
