DnD 3.5 Prophet's Blood

Derrik I see nothing wrong with your "how each of us may know each other in the community" bit with Dalen & Daffyd. It would offer an old friendship to be rekindled and still much better to be left unsaid until the time is right. Though I would assume that it would be best if Dalen approached Daffyd first. Perhaps bringing with him a carving of Daffyd's late wife that he made for him so that he could have something to remember her by (and to be grateful to Dalen by). It would be crude but still a good liking. Then get the two of them to the tavern to share a pitcher and begin again on a lost friendship(on Daffyd's tab) Then whatever Notmousse throws at us we would see it as another opportunity to pick up and go adventuring together and fulfill those dreams of thier youth.

Or something like that.

Probably not just visists by my mother. I picture her, making meals and care packages for cases like this. And not just visiting herself, I would think every so often I'd be conscripted.

*here take this wool sweater over to Daffyd (sorry if i got wrong name), the poor man. Ever since his wife died he hasn't been taking proper care of himself.*

*take this basket of biscuits and chicken to Catrin. Why the poor girl was practically skin and bones last time i saw her.*

you know, typical mom stuff.

Aww, I like Kardus's mum already! :D

Well I'm really looking forward to meeting you visitor types in-game. :D

I think it's great having some characters who already know each other a little, and others who are total strangers. Especially now when we've got at least 3 pairs of characters who know each other quite well in one way or another. Makes it easier and more interesting for us to "party up" if there's a mix of old and new relationships in the group.

OK. I have put up some background, but it's nowhere near finished... I'm now starting to appreciate why Middle-Aged is a character failing. :) (The amount I've written would be fine if my character was in his early twenties.)

randomling: You're right that Catrin would be a difficult subject, but Daffyd would have been patient, and often let her take breaks while he painted from memory. His work shows good likeness, and sometimes - and Catrin would be one of these cases - really gets at the spirit of the subject. I think there'd be at least one painting of Catrin that shows her fidgeting in her seat, looking out the window... how about her mother refused it and insisted that Daffyd paint something more "proper", so he gave the realistic one to the girl for her thirteenth birthday?
I don't think Daffyd would have gotten to the point of being a constant figure in Catrin's life, but he probably leaned on Willem to actually teach her how to use a sword. It seems to me that the "she's going to learn anyway - do you want her to have to do it the hard way?" argument would be effective.
And probably accurate. ;)

Unkabear: That sounds good. I think Daffyd would have taken the gift gracelessly, making a snide remark that he has plenty of his own work in that line. Assuming that Dalen didn't punch him out, Daffyd would apologise, explaining that the wound is still fresh... after a little more reflection, he'd make the offer to buy a pitcher at the tavern, but not that night.
The background that's up so far should give you some idea of what Daffyd might say about his apprenticeship, though I still have quite a bit more planned out.

SolosAddie: Haha. :D Right. Daffyd probably thinks fairly highly of Kardus, given the younger man's cleverness - assuming he's had an opportunity to find that out. Hmm. I guess Kardus' mother would at least have implied that he ought to spend some time with the widower lately. Maybe they've played a game or two of the local chess equivalent? (Looking at their stats, they'd be pretty evenly matched; Daffyd should be a better planner, but he's reckless and his intuition is terrible.)

Just a quick write-up on History/Personality. I'll do some more editing tomorrow at work since things are gonna be slow ;)

History:
Araug was into the Broken Fist (named for their symbol, a spiked gauntlet) clan. He had the typical upbringing of any orcish male, trained in the arts of warfare from an early age. He quickly picked up on the nuances of battle, often besting his peers when sparring. During a raid on the Broken Fist stronghold by the rival Skullface clan, most of his clan was destroyed. Araug's patrol was ambushed on their return by a group of Skullclan orcs, and Araug was mortally wounded in the skirmish. He managed to retreat through the forest a few miles before collapsing into unconsciousness.

When he awoke, he was in a small cottage being tended to by an elderly human. He attempted to attack his savior, but was quickly subdued by the venerable monk. Still dizzy from the loss of blood he had suffered, Araug slipped back into unconsciousness. When he recovered, the monk identified himself as Ying Li. Araug wanted to leave immediately to find out what had happened to his clan, but Master Li had informed him that he was the last of the Broken Fist clan. The Skullface clan had wiped them out, and assimilated those that swore allegiance to them. With nowhere left to go and no place to call home, Araug begged Master Li to teach him how to fight as he did.

Three years passed, and Araug had finally learned all his Master could teach him. A week ago, Master Li passed away. He instructed his student to sell the cottage and make his way into the world.

Recent:
Araug sold the cottage and bought a few provisions in town. The townsfolk recognize him as the old hermit's student, and typically don't go out of their way to avoid him like they would a normal orc. He's unsure of what he should do next, and is waiting for a sign pointing him in the right direction.

Personality:
Araug is the strong, silent type. He recognizes that most people don't tend to converse with orcs unless they have to. His Master taught him that all life is to be respected, but that conflicts with his orcish heritage, and he struggles to keep his temper in check at times. He relishes combat, and fights with a controlled fury. He constantly refers to the teachings of Master Li to keep him on the right path, because he fears what he may become if he strays.

I believe that it would be more of a peace offering the first time. A simple "I know the pain and I am sorry for lost time. I wish we were closer so that I could offer more comfort and I am sorry" I am going to assume that this particular part would take place before the first post, or we could write it up via email and submit it to Notmousse before posting begins just for our own familiarity to the rp relationship. Then when rp begins it could be Daffyd coming to Dalen to offer a peace pint.

I am flexible about the whole thing, let me know what you think.

That all sounds great! :) I bet Catrin's grandmother has held on to that realistic picture and keeps it somewhere in pride of place, even though Catrin's at an age where a four-year-old picture embarrasses the hell out of her. (Catrin's grandma is a lot less sniffy than her mum.) I'm imagining that Catrin remembers Daffyd as nice and quite sweet for an old man ;) and is sorry about his wife, but I don't imagine they've had a huge amount of contact since that last portrait. That sound okay?

Probably makes sense that Catrin wouldn't know that Daffyd influenced Willem to teach her the sword, doesn't it?
