Character backgrounds and motivation

Just to chip in here again:

Yes, outside motivation is great. Honestly, the best moments in any campaign don't come when you loot the badguy's horde, they come when you accomplish a character goal. Its very rewarding to see your character make something out of himself in ways other than those involving experience and levels.

But this is coming from me, and whenever I play a PC (which is rare, as I DM a lot) I write up about a 10-12 page short story/background on my character. Its a lot of stuff to put on the DMs shoulders, but if he works just one or two things in it is immensly rewarding. I always make sure my characters give me some good background stuff, so I can work it in (its also a nice little cheat sheet for DMs--whenever you can't think of a random encounter or the like, incorporate something from one of your players' backgrounds!).

You know, you could try talking with the players, explaining to them that you'll want a different style of play than the previous DM did...

I personally think

I personally think that all but the most heroic paladin would sneak around, and these tactics are role-playing in a way, as characters do fear for their lives. I take similar steps to avoid detection at lower levels, and the character in my party with -6 move silently is probably going to use half his skill points to make sure he doesn't wake every monster.

Thanks for the replies...

I probably need to rethink my adventures from a FR standpoint before I run them. A lot of the trouble came because this is my first mid-high level campaign.

At this point they have stirred the wrath of a power group or two, so I think it's best that they keep their tactics. Leomund's Secure Shelter is beginning to sound like a good plan. :D

Then I take it that the paranoid player is the norm in any high level campaign, yes? (At least if they mess with the uber-villain NPCs...)

Ok. If you'll need any help with that, we'll be there.

The PC's employ sneaky tactics to counter what they presume a typical villian of their caliber would/should be doing to defend their lair -- so why isnt he?; especially well organized wealthy organizations. Obviously they have given the matter considerable thought - the same process the villians have: both in planning assults during their early careers breaking into other's lairs and now when planning their own defenses -- so take notes as to what the PCs expect and counter accordingly (adjusted for the villian's presumed budget and locale)
