DnD: What is it to you?

D&D is a brand name that has been applied over almost 36 years to many products which vary greatly in style and substance. With each incarnation of the game, I have run and played in games that also vary greatly from one another, though the main substance has generally been Medieval Fantasy with a focus on character, allowing a story or stories to potentially unfold over the course of one or more game sessions. Such stories often include interaction with a setting and nonplayer characters, combat against deadly foes and monsters, feats of derring-do, and even the accumulation of wealth and power, among many other things.

To me?

D&D is about dungeon-crawling, about exploration, and Gygaxian naturalism. It's about kicking down doors, taking their stuff, and having a blast over some beer and pretzels.
