DnD will never die...

I'm quite an optimistic kind of guy.

In my world, a pessimistic person may think D&D will change. And by this, I mean D&D evolving but not being a tabletop RPG anymore. Becoming purely miniatures, purely video game, whatever.

An optimistic person will think D&D will always have a place on the entertainment market, because RPGs (not designing RPGs, not writing supplements - these are different things) have a place in this world with dice and people and imagination around the table that no board game can provide. When compared to Hasbro's research showing more people played board games this year than video games, that's VERY encouraging for D&D.

But then, I'm an optimistic kind of guy. :)

I originally had the same thought, but I assumed that the mother herself bought some dice for the kids. I hope. ;)

Oh and by the way, The Source is NOT in Saint Paul, but is in one of it's suburbs called Falcon Heights, I believe. Although I suppose people will understand the city of Saint Paul better than Falcon Heights.

I remember doing chores to pay for my rpg materials and comic books at the age of 12. Didn't get paid for my own stuff (cleaning room, washing clothes, etc) but for extra things that my parents usually did (washing car, mowing lawn). I think buying them myself really made me feel ownership of what I bought.

To this day, my dice bag still holds those dice, and those comic books are still in a shoebox in my wife and my apartment.

Although I can understand the mother not wanting a stranger to buy toys for her kid, I also see why your wife wanted to buy it for them. I remember the happiness I had passing on the hobby to kids in a summer program where I was working. Some even bought their own dice and PhBs. It was a proud moment for me.

I don't think pen'n'paper RPGs will ever go away.

I hope that you're right, but some big names in the industry fear that we're already headed down that road (you can catch some of the indepth discussion if you frequent designer blogs).

Like everything else there will be highs and lows, but pen'n'paper RPGs are able to combine social interaction and imagination in such a unique way that I don't think anything else will every completely erase them.

When I'm old and grey, and retired (hopefully :P)...

I expect to be spending time around a table with equally old folks playing our favorite past-time... and perhaps DMing for grandkids... (why, in my day... )

[opinion]Beats the heck outta shuffleboard or golf :P[/opinion]

She was convinced to buy them by some members of the staff and ourselves telling her the joys of roleplaying and what it can do for young minds...

That is exactly why I said St Paul and not Falcon Heights....

It's easy to get The Source's location wrong when the dividing line between Falcon Heights and St. Paul is within sight of the store's location.

The RPG hobby market may become smaller, or it may grow, but the game will never disappear.

Don't confuse RPG publishers with the hobby.

There are still people who build model railroads even though computer simulators can do it better, and there are still people who do fly fishing. There will always be people who like some weird thing or other...:)
