Do animals have magic item slots?

As the question asks...

For example, could a Paladin put a Girdle of Giant Strength around his Warhorse's middle and have it function? What about Bracers of Health around the fetlock? Necklaces?

There are rules for arding in the PhB - is it reasonable to assume that the increase in price applies to the base cost for the armour, and that the cost to enchant it is the same? What about magical helms?

While it seem reasonably obvious that boots won't work, could a caster with Create Wondrous Item create Horseshoes of Speed (a la Boots of Speed)?

At the D&D open at GenCon last year one of the characters was the Dwarven Paladin's War Boar, which I played. He had leg wrappings of speed (exactly like boots of speed. He also had +2 Tusk Caps and a bag of holding in addition to a medallion. Several published Dungeon adventures have dragons wearing magic items, so yeah it may need to be custom made, but I don't see why not.

The item might have to be modified a bit for the animal, but they can have magic items on them. A lot of stuff has to be made or worn differently, but it still works. I think the same basic slots can just be applied to animals, with some common sense modifications if needed.

Yeah, but they should be things you would already put on the animal.

Dog collars for dogs, saddles for horses, tusk caps for elephants, etc.

There are rules for this somewhere, but I can't remember where.

I really like the idea because it allows animals a better chance of living. But, I've always spoiled the animals in I'm DMing for. Give them bonus feats and skill points (from being trained). It's no good when fluffy can'r face down the dragon with the group.

This subject is dealt with somewhat in Tome & Blood. It refers specifically to familiars, but I don't see why most of it couldn't also apply to regular animals. Especially supernaturally intelligent animals like a paladin's mount.

Hey, I just realized my crow familiar can activate command word items... I'm going to have to make a magic item for him now just so I can exploit that fact. I'm taking creative/evil suggestions. ;)
