D&D 5E (2014) Do familiars grant a bonus?

i've been seeing some conflicting information.

A bonus to.... what? Nose picking? Interpretive dance? Dwarf tossing? Don't keep us in suspense.

i'm wondering if, depending on the familiar, you get a bonus to a skill or something similar

i've been seeing some conflicting information.

There is no bonus inherent to familiars (such as existed during 3rd edition). Instead, in 5e, your familiar can take the Help action during an encounter, granting you advantage on a check or attack.

Note that if your DM creates an opportunity for your PC to obtin a familiar using the optional, DM driven, familiar rules in the MM, those familiars grant some abilities.
