Do Hydras Lay Eggs?

Dragon #272 has the Ecology of the Hydra in it.

Page 87 (footnote) - "Female hydras lay small clutches of 1d4 eggs."

And if dragons can be liches, derro can. You might need a template just for them, but that's probably more interesting anyway.

It looks like Grover Cleaveland beat me to it, but yes, "The Ecology of the Hydra" states that hydras lay eggs. I'm not sure if that's as "official" as you had hoped, though.

i always had them "budding". but that may just be b/c i remember RW hydrae doing that in science class.

besides the one Hercules killed doesn't dispute this.

the extra heads are the new monsters. when they get cut off they grow into the new hydra.

in D&D that isn't how they have them. but i always liked the idea. much more true to mythology. besides now you have a room full of them. :uhoh:

I just want to take this moment to also register my confusion on why aren't Hydras dragons.. or even abberrations. They are listed as 'magical beasts'. I guess having multiple heads is kind of magical.

An abberant Hydra seems to have so many more possibilities, though. It could be a mutant variety of degenerate dragon spawn.

Who cares what the dragon says about ecology? Your the Dm do you want them to have eggs? Then do so.
Yes who laughs at players when they quote life of articles and splat books at me.
