Do Hydras Lay Eggs?

Peter said:
Yeah, but the original questioner was Erik Mona who was probably trying to leverage the awesome research capabilities of Enworld for something official.

I find this amusing because I recently had my Dragonlance players find a cache of hydra eggs, and it's connected to a storyline inspired by Age of Worms, which is one of those things Erik is working on.

They were like leathery footballs. Doesn't everything sound more appetizing when it's described as being leathery? The pyrohydra eggs were much warmer and blotched with red and orange, and the cryohydra ones were cooler and blotched with blue and purple, but most were brown.

Cheers,
Cam

I swear there was an old skool module -- probably for Basic D&D -- that had a wilderness encounter with a hydra nest and a clutch of eggs. Maybe X1?

He's welcome to it! My PCs shot the crate the eggs were in with flaming frost arrows just to make sure. They weren't taking any chances.

i always had them "budding". but that may just be b/c i remember RW hydrae doing that in science class.

besides the one Hercules killed doesn't dispute this.

the extra heads are the new monsters. when they get cut off they grow into the new hydra.

in D&D that isn't how they have them. but i always liked the idea. much more true to mythology. besides now you have a room full of them. :uhoh:

So when a mommy Hydra and a daddy Hydra get together to make baby Hydras, they just rip each others heads off? ;)

there is that.

kinda like the old Wargames quote about reproducing without sex.

I assume hydras aren't dragons for the same reason a war troll isn't a giant and a roper isn't an aberration and a derro isn't a humanoid (therefore... tough luck for those adventures that want to feature derro liches).

pfft, as if something as minor as critter Type would stop me from throwing down a Template wherever the hell I felt like it. :P

Lich Derro? Why not, so what if the RAW is flawed as to not allow them. Thats why our beloved games has DMs
