Do paladins work in most games?

Elf Witch,

Here's a nice compromise then. He can keep the stats he rolled (this is another reason I favor point buy. No one outshines the rest on good rolls) but they must be used on another character.

However to keep him in check, just make him a level lower than the rest of the party. Not a huge hit but a significant one. If he's still unwilling maybe consider getting a new player. Or another option is always Holy Warrior from Book of the Righteous.

I talked to him about this and he dosen't want to give up the character he thinks we can try and make it work that he will be less rigid and discuss things with the party before taking oaths on our behalf. We'll see.

It would also be good if the other players would maybe look into playing better aligned characters I am as sick of some of their characters as I am of the paladin actually I am more tired of them and the quest for more magical items and the we can do anything we want regardless of the consquences.

When he rolled so well the DM did a few things to bring things more even anyone who had in the 30s point buy got two extra feats and the 40s got one and the only player with a 28 got three.

I have mixed feelings about point buy sometimes it is to generic a feel and it takes the chance of playing a really fantastic character away. In this case I don't think it is because of his high stats that their are issues it is because of his portrayal of a paladin.

And dropping him from the game is not something I would want to do I have played with him over five years and he is a good friend to boot.

What I would realy like to see is us just scrap this campaign and start a new one there has so muvh murky water under the bridge I think it would be great to have a clean slate and a fresh start.

There is no way he is going to drop this character first of all he rolled well it is a 58 point character second he has put a lot of work and background into it he is very attached. He is working through a feat chain and other things from the book of exalted deeds to get the saint PRC.

The rest of the party leaves the paladin. It make IC sence. And it also does sound like the player has put his character's progression ahead of the group's enjoyment. So the group responce is basically saying, sure, persue your feat progression and become a saint. But we're not going to hang around to while you do it.

OK. I realise that it could be quite disruptive. One way of approaching the issue might be to discuss the possibility of building the next party in a more heroic saviours mode, into which the paladin would be a welcome addition.

From all I've read, and what I've experienced first hand, most players don't want to have to 'sacrifice' their freedom in action to accomodate the Paladin in the party. Regardless of their own alignments, they pretty much want to be able to do anything (even Evil things) their character wants/needs to do (in their opinion), without fear of criticism from party members.

 Wow.

This has made me think of a theory. Maybe the problem isn't paladins so much as players writing NG on their character sheets when they really want to play CN or N. This seems to be a very common attitude these days.

I mean, you'd think that if the whole party is good, and played as such, then they might have little conflicts (cool roleplaying opportunities, I say) with the paladin, but not huge intra-party fights. In the game I'm currently playing in, we're all good and while we have no paladins, one would fit right in. Sure, he'd often be arguing methodology with my CG ranger, but there's no way it would degenerate into actual power plays.

I've read this thread for a while now and I believe the issue is the DM and not the player... I suggest you talk to the DM, of course let the other player know first, or better maybe you guys (I use that generically) can talk to the DM together. :)

Elf Witch. I just saw your last post. Given the additional insights, yes, it might be better to just scrap it and start again. Maybe a little post game discussion might allow the next game to be more successful.

What did you like in the setting?
What didn't you like in the setting?
What was the best moment for your character?

Putting some questions down on paper first and allowing people time to read each others answers before the discussion may help keep the discussion more focused.

I just got off the phone with one of the DMs the one that is running this little trek through the abyss. After a long talk I am going to sit down and have a talk with the player who plays the paladin. I am going to try and let him him no how much I am being bothered by the way he plays that he has a tendency to not listen to anyone, how barking orders and treating us like lackey's is not working.

But the DM also said that he is going to speeed up this plotline get us out of the abyss and then suggest we take a break from DnD he wants to try doing a fantasy hero game where first of all we have characters who have a reason to be together none of this you meet in Tavern and he is going to try something very different we tell him what we want our characters to be like their goals and fears and he is going to build them and we won't know exactly what our stats are to give us chance to really try role playing the characters.

I am actually looking forward to this I would like to see how it works.

Elf Witch,

Tell them the rest of what we talked about. Some questions you should answer:
1) is it just the Paladin's problem or even the Paladin's PC's problem? Or does it take two?
2) does anybody else besides you and your roommate have a problem with the paladin? Is is true to say that the "party doesn't get along with him"?
3) Can't we all just get along?
