Cannibalistic, subway-dwelling, Canadian Greenpeace cults.

My players never connected the dots until it was too late.

Just think about it.

  • Morlock as mentioned above, when you look at the race they are creepy and can be easily altered for a fantasy setting.
  • Troglodytes are also a favorite of mine, underground lizard people.
  • Spider-kin - Driders but without the Drow connections.
  • Rat-Men - My favorite of this race is the Skaven but that is WFRP

Kind of strange, and plant-based, but... "mandrake" is a vaguely human-shaped root that, according to folklore, grows in the spot of an execution and can scream you to death when you uproot it. That legend could form the basis of a sapient race of subterranean tuberfolk.

Gnomes of Bism (Narnia)
Mahars of Pellucidar (agree, they are a nifty race, and fought Tarzan too)
Silurians (Dr Who - I prefer them less human looking than Vastra though)
Moloids (Marvel goblins, descended from humans trapped underground with some Deviants)

This is brilliant, I'm going to add them, perfect thanks!

Many of the various Vedas describe some interesting not-quite-humans... about the only thing I really gained from taking Survey of Eastern Philosophy at 0700....
