I always allowed feats and multiclassing when I ran 5e, but I'm unlikely to ever run it again.

I strongly prefer playing with feats, but a compelling enough game can overcome this.

Lack of multiclassing is a dealbreaker. Full stop.

what feats do you pick when. You play?

Like any optional rule, I strongly consider what feats will bring to the table as far as supporting the vision and theme of the campaign. An example is my Eberron campaign where the PCs are larger-than-life type heroes. The feats represent a boost to power, capability, or versatility above the baseline expectation which fits with theme.

But if I'm running a typical zero-to-hero type game, I don't use feats. A possible exception might be if I expect there to be a large pool of characters in which case feats would be a good option to foster differentiation. Otherwise, nah, feats aren't needed in my view.

It's been a long time... but Magical Initiate (I think), Ritual Caster, Linguist, Resilient, maybe?

I am always multiclassed. In all three editions of WotC D&D, I favor Bard|Warlock, while 5e opens up Paladin|Warlock as an option. (Oath of the Ancients + Fey or Great Old One, though any "good" Oath with any "not totally evil" Patron would work.) I'll play other character types... but those are the ones I always come back to.

Still waiting for the DM that'll allow me to play a Warforged Whirling Frenzy Barbarian|Ranger with Monk multiclass.

Have always used feats because they are way more fun than continuously getting stat boosts. They are also a great way to customize characters.

What I'd personally like to see are less stat bonuses in the game. 😊

When I ran 5e it was almost always low-level AL, where feats only came up on variant humans, or 1st-level intro games, often using basic-pdf characters, so no feats or MCing.
