Do you live in San Francisco? Can you help me help my game?

creepiness on the rock

I agree fully with the earlier post regarding the atmosphere of Alcatraz island - it's mostly sad and wistful, rather than the angry you get at some other tragic/darkly historical sites.

However.

One of my coworkers used to work for the company that produces their audio tour (little digital recorders that lead you around in a proscribed tour, without guides; rent them for $5. If you go, pay the fiver, it's worth it.)

A few years ago, her company had a lot of maintenance to do on the players and headphones, so a group of them packed a night's gear and went out on the last boat, and camped in the cellhouse. After their work was done, and long after the rangers had left, they did a flashlight tour of the areas not open to the public.

She says it was the creepiest thing she has ever done - the infirmary and the basement in the dark, by flashlight, on an old prison island...

Some of the more brave people slept in some of the cells. She chose to sleep on a catwalk. No one had the cojones to sleep in solitary.

Yeah, okay, I don't even know if I would have the cajaones to do that. That's just bit on the crazy side. Cool, but crazy.

Hey, did someone mention there was a commune there at one point? When did that happen and how?

Hey Guys,

I was just curious...what's the three top "things to do" in San Francsico? Or what are three really popular hobbies, events, etc? (If that makes sense.)

Touristy things (like you've never been before) or cool, off-the-beaten-path kinda stuff?

For tourists, I'd recommend 1) the cable cars (buy a day pass, ride as many lines as you can), 2) Haight-Ashbury (ESPECIALLY Amoeba Records), and 3) walk the Golden Gate Bridge. Bring a camera to all three.

For the less touristy spots, I'd go with 1) Castro Street (fun for straights too :)), 2) The Museum of Modern Art (one of the architectural wonders of the city with a world-class collection), and 3) Drinks and tunes at Cafe Du Nord.

I think Haight-Ashbury is good for non-tourists, too. Just try to curtail your urge to slap the upper-middle-class 20-year-old panhandlers down from Seattle on a lark. It can be difficult.

I'd also recommend a long walk down Market Street, or along Embarcadero. And, yes, the Castro is fun, even for us breeders, but go at night. For Market and Embarcadero, night walks aren't recommended. Neither is really dangerous, but tourists are very easy to pick out in San Francisco, and there are always some folks who prey on them.

Rent horses at the stables in Golden Gate Park and spend a few hours exploring. (BTW, a horseback chase through the Park would make a great RPG encounter.)

Go to a Giants game.

If you're got a group, spend some time at Ocean Beach, especially at night and/or during the peak of the fog. Bring makings for a fire, 'cause the beach gets seriously cold.
